Job summary

University of Calgary is seeking a Junior Laboratory Technician for the Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine. This fixed-term, recurring part-time position is for approximately 3 months with possible extension based on grant funding.

The role reports to the Principal Investigator and supports the Multiple Myeloma Research Program at the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute. Candidates should have a relevant bachelor's degree or be enrolled and lab-experienced.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or current enrollment in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Health Sciences, Biochemistry, Immunology, Molecular Biology, or related field.
• Previous lab experience in a research setting or coursework.
• Experience following established lab protocols and maintaining records.

Responsibilities

• Prepare reagents, buffers, solutions, and materials for experiments.
• Process, label, store biological samples per procedures.

Description

The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Junior Laboratory Technician. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 3 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Junior Laboratory Technician reports to the Principal Investigator and works under the day-to-day supervision of senior laboratory personnel within the Multiple Myeloma Research Program at the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute, Department of Oncology, Cumming School of Medicine.

Recurring Part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

• Assist with routine laboratory activities and experiments in support of Multiple Myeloma research projects
• Prepare reagents, buffers, solutions, media, and other laboratory materials required for research activities
• Process, label, catalog, and store biological samples in accordance with established laboratory procedures
• Maintain accurate laboratory records, databases, and research documentation to ensure data integrity and traceability
• Assist with mammalian cell culture activities and other basic molecular and cellular biology procedures under supervision
• Provide technical support for research activities involving flow cytometry, lentiviral transduction, and CAR T-cell research projects, as directed by senior laboratory personnel
• Support the collection, organization, and entry of experimental data
• Assist with inventory management, including monitoring stock levels, receiving supplies, and maintaining laboratory inventories
• Prepare laboratory equipment and workspaces for experimental procedures and perform routine equipment maintenance and quality control checks
• Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and compliance with institutional biosafety and safety standards
• Follow established laboratory protocols, standard operating procedures, and Occupational Health and Safety requirements
• Communicate effectively with research staff, students, and investigators regarding laboratory activities and project requirements
• Contribute to the efficient operation of the Multiple Myeloma Research Program by providing reliable technical and administrative support

Qualifications / Requirements

• Completion of, or current enrollment in, a Bachelor's degree program in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Health Sciences, Biochemistry, Immunology, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline
• Previous laboratory experience obtained through coursework, summer employment, volunteer work, co‑op placements, or research projects
• Experience working in a laboratory environment following established protocols and procedures
• Experience maintaining accurate records and documentation is considered an asset
• Experience working collaboratively as part of a research team is considered an asset
• Should possess familiarity with basic laboratory techniques and demonstrate an interest in biomedical or cancer research
• Laboratory Techniques

  • Sample processing, labeling, storage, and documentation
  • Laboratory organization, inventory management, and equipment maintenance
  • Adherence to laboratory safety and biosafety requirements
