Job summary

Vertex Resource Group Ltd. is hiring a Junior Environmental Technician for our Sherwood Park, Alberta office.

The role emphasizes fieldwork (mostly in the field), Detailed Site Assessments, soil classification, and weed spraying, with opportunities to support project managers and perform data entry and reporting. Ideal candidates will have 1–2 years of environmental experience, familiarity with remote navigation, and the ability to travel within Western Canada.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or higher post-secondary education in Reclamation, Soil Science, Environmental Science, Biological Science, Natural Resource Management, Forestry or other applicable field
  • Minimum 1 to 2 years of environmental work experience in: Pre-reclamation assessments, Vegetation Monitoring/Reclamation Site Inspections, DSAs, Soil classification and assessment, Soil salvage and reclamation monitoring, Weed spraying
  • Understanding of remote area navigation; maps, compass, GPS, and aerial photos for field navigation is advantageous
  • Ability to drive trucks and/off-road vehicles in rough terrain
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations, guidelines and standards
  • Ability to work in a team and independently
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with advanced Word and Excel
  • Demonstrated communication and decision-making skills
  • Willingness to gain field experience in remote locations
  • Willingness to work in the field for extended periods
  • Willingness to travel within Western Canada, as required
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Strong time management, organizational and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

OVERVIEW

Vertex is currently accepting applications for a full-time Junior Environmental Technician to join our team in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Ideal candidates will have experience in plant, wetland and wildlife identification, soil classification, Detailed Site Assessments (DSAs) and/or weed spraying. The successful candidates will also possess a keen eye for detail, be critical thinkers, and will enjoy working in the field for extended periods of time. Reporting to an Environmental Project Manager, the Junior Environmental Technician must be someone who is willing to travel and take additional responsibilities as the position/project evolves. Previous environmental experience is considered an asset.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Diploma or higher post-secondary education in Reclamation, Soil Science, Environmental Science, Biological Science, Natural Resource Management, Forestry or other applicable field
  • Minimum 1 to 2 years of environmental work experience in the following scopes:
    • Pre-reclamation assessments
    • Vegetation Monitoring/Reclamation Site Inspections
    • Executing DSA’s throughout all land uses in Alberta
    • Soil classification and assessment
    • Soil salvage and reclamation monitoring
    • Weed spraying
  • Understanding of remote area navigation; experience using maps, compass, GPS, and aerial photos for navigation in the field is advantageous
  • Demonstrated ability to drive trucks and/or a variety of off-road vehicles in rough terrain
  • Working knowledge of and ability to interpret environmental regulations, guidelines and standards
  • Ability to work in a team and independently
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with advanced knowledge of Word and Excel
  • Demonstrated communication and decision-making skills
  • Willingness to gain field experience in remote locations
  • Willingness to work in the field for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel within Western Canada, as required

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities will vary depending on the candidate’s strengths and areas of interest, the responsibilities included below are inclusive of a range of skill sets that Vertex will require to execute programs and projects in 2026.

  • Field work is a requirement, approximately 95% or more of time will be allocated to the field
