Description: The Alberta Jubilee Auditoria Society ("AJAS") is a not‑for‑profit organization that emphasizes extraordinary patron services and fostering cultural development in both Edmonton and Calgary facilities. The Society is led by a Board of Directors with representatives from across Alberta and works with the Government of Alberta (GOA)’s Ministry of Culture and Status of Women to operate these legacy performing arts venues through front‑of‑house, back‑of‑house, marketing and community engagement services.

The Opportunity: The Financial Controller is responsible for delivering the Society’s strategy through leadership, execution, structure, and overall business performance. They are responsible for creation, execution, and realization of annual plans for the Jubilee Society capable of carrying out the organization’s objectives. They are key in helping to define the Jubilee as a leader in the Cultural industry and helping raise the cultural industry within the business community. Time commitment may increase during certain periods including quarter and year ends, and completion deadlines of budgets and forecasts.

The Financial Controller works with the Senior Management Team by providing leadership input on an ongoing basis to the current, comprehensive, living business plan for the Society. They provide leadership in developing and keeping current all financial related duties, goals, and objectives in this comprehensive business plan; and is responsible for realizing the components of the business plan that pertain to financial services and operations for the Jubilees. The position is open to candidates in either Calgary or Edmonton.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepares financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations ("ASNFPO")
  • Reports to and supports the Chief Executive Officer ("CEO") in financial matters
  • Develops a dashboard for the CEO to monitor daily financial performance
  • Prepares annual budgets, forecasts and comparison/analysis to actuals
  • Undertakes special projects/initiatives as required by the CEO and the Board
  • Ensures timely completion of monthly and annual reporting to stakeholders. Stakeholders are comprised of the Board of Directors, Board sub‑committees, such as Audit and Finance, and the Government of Alberta.
  • Leads financial audits and other mandated government reviews and projects
  • Oversees cash flow and capital management
  • Maintains and oversees compliance with internal control policies. Recommends and implements improvements and changes as required.
  • Creates a communication system that allows Board Members a one stop access point to get periodic updates on the operations of the AJAS
  • Maintains payroll and personnel updates in the payroll system
  • Administers and oversees the Employee Benefits Plan
  • Administers the Society’s insurance program
  • Collaborates on Inventory management and point-of-sale data for reporting purposes
Qualifications
  • Accounting designation highly preferred
  • Post-Secondary Degree with a focus in Accounting/Finance; such as Bachelor of Commerce
  • Work experience at a public accounting firm or/and Government relations role would be an asset
  • Proven experience in a senior financial accounting and/or management role, preferably in the not‑for‑profit sector
  • Established experience in analytical and financial reviewing for financial efficiencies and cash flow management
  • Budgeting and forecasting expertise
  • Experience with Government relations
  • Driven self‑starter with superior organizational skills
  • Experience leading Governance Committees and reporting to a Board of Directors
  • Travel required between Calgary and Edmonton
Compensation
  • The salary range for this position is $80,000 – $90,000 per year based on experience.
