Job description
Artstrek – Theatre Alberta’s Summer School Camp

Artstrek is seeking dedicated, community‑driven instructors who are passionate about working with teens for its 2025 program. The team of ten instructors is led by Curriculum Director Linette J Smith, with additional guidance from Program Director Jenna Rodgers and Theatre Alberta staff members. Instructors are contracted to develop curriculum and teach students in the areas of acting, text analysis, music, design, voice, movement, and directing, with a focus on a specific, pre‑selected theatre script. Artstrek 2025 will explore a Canadian Musical.

Artstrek instructors play a key role in welcoming young artists from across the province into the Albertan theatre community, fostering their artistic development, and showing them that they belong. If you are excited about the future of theatre and the youth who will make new and exciting things happen, then Artstrek is the place for you! Each year, Artstrek’s creative instructors gather to help make camp rigorous and joyful for students from across the province of Alberta.

About Artstrek
  • Artstrek runs for two weeks each July at Red Deer Polytechnic, with younger students attending the first week and older students attending the second week.
  • Instructors arrive one week before the students to prepare the curriculum together, and are at RDP for a total of three weeks.
  • Student acceptance is based on commitment, enthusiasm, and a recommendation from a teacher or community member – we don’t hold auditions.
  • Artstrek aims to develop students’ theatre skills and theatre appreciation, as well as life competency skills like problem‑solving, leadership, self‑esteem, and teamwork.
  • Artstrek is an immersive theatre experience, and all contractors should expect to be engaged full time for the duration of the contract.
  • The program has been running in the province of Alberta for 65 years. For more information on Artstrek, click here.
About the Position
  • Instructors are contracted to be at Red Deer Polytechnic for 3 weeks in July 2025 (exact dates TBD) to develop curriculum and provide instruction. Instructors should also be prepared to attend one or two short online training meetings in June.
  • Instructors are provided shared accommodation and daily meals on campus at Red Deer Polytechnic.
  • All subjects at Artstrek are team‑taught. Instructors work in pairs to develop and deliver classes in their area of expertise.
  • Artstrek 2025 is divided into two separate weeks of instruction (“Explorations”) for different age groups.
    • Exploration I (July 2025): This six‑day program is for enthusiastic theatre lovers who are 12 to 15 years old.
    • Exploration II (July 2025): This seven‑day program is for 16 to 18 year olds with a keen interest in theatre and a dedication to increasing their knowledge and skill level.
  • Instructors teach four 60‑minute classes each day (typically 20‑24 students per class), as well as participate in daily warm‑up activities, group singing, regular meetings, and some evening activities.
  • Anticipated honourarium of $4,000, pending confirmation of funding.
  • Instructors will work alongside Artstrek Supervisors (former Artstrek students), who assist with administrative tasks and day‑to‑day operations of the program.
Application Packages Should Include
  • A work resume that outlines experience particularly pertinent to working with teenagers.
  • A theatre resume that demonstrates your experience, performance‑based or otherwise.
  • A cover letter that outlines your area(s) of artistic practice, why you are interested in teaching at Artstrek, and what skills/experience you would bring to a collaborative teaching team.
Hiring Notes

Artstrek is seeking instructors who are teaching artists, as well as junior and senior high school educators and/or post‑secondary educators.

Interviews will take place over Zoom on December 15th and 17th, 2024.

Theatre Alberta is committed to inclusive hiring. We encourage applications from artists who self‑identify as members of under‑represented communities. Artstrek is a safe space that welcomes and fosters diversity, both in our staff and our students.

As Artstrek contracts a new team of instructors around a new script each year, we encourage applications from a broad range of artistic backgrounds. If your area of expertise does not necessarily line up with this year’s play selection, we will keep your resume on file for future opportunities.
