Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science and should ideally have actuarial experience alongside knowledge of SQL, R, and Python.

Salary

Job Overview

Working with a high degree of autonomy, the Actuarial Consultant of Insurance Risk Management contributes to accurate and timely measurement, monitoring and reporting of pricing, underwriting, reserving, catastrophe and reinsurance risks. The successful candidate will build business acumen to inform strategic initiatives, business processes and regulatory requirements, applying their knowledge to a broad range of actuarial analysis on emerging and ongoing risks across the organization.

Job Responsibilities
  • Insurance Risk Management
    • Insurance risk is defined as the risk of loss resulting from pricing and underwriting reserving catastrophic and reinsurance risks.
    • Provides oversight and challenge to the effectiveness and consistency of enterprise‑wide insurance risk and actuarial practices via quarterly independent actuarial reviews.
    • Performs independent rate indications, pricing segmentation and line of business performance analysis, reserving valuations of major business lines, assessing long‑term climate impact on insurance risk.
    • Supports the review of key insurance risk models to minimize model risk, including actuarial pricing budgets and forecasting and reinsurance catastrophe models.
  • Analytical
    • Researches, extracts and manipulates complex data from relevant sources and assesses data quality.
    • Supports the business and overall team by performing analyses/reviews and completing ad‑hoc requests/special projects in a timely manner with minimal support from peers and leaders.
    • Evaluates procedures and processes and recommends alternatives or improvements.
  • Process Improvement / Efficiency
    • Evaluates existing processes to find areas for increased efficiency.
    • Identifies opportunities for automation of routine tasks and implementation of advanced techniques while ensuring ethical and responsible application of solutions.
    • Develops new approaches to problem‑solving and assesses impacts of solution options with minimal support from leaders.
  • Industry
    • Identifies emerging industry trends and analyzes the impact they will have on Wawanesa.
    • Encouraged to represent Wawanesa at external events that may include universities, actuarial clubs, industry organizations and charitable causes.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science or a related discipline.
  • More than four years of actuarial experience (an asset).
  • 7 CAS exams or ACAS designation (an asset).
  • Working programming knowledge of SQL, R and Python (an asset).
  • Experience in pricing, reserving or building actuarial models (an asset).
