Job description

Assistant Professor, Theatre – MacEwan University

MacEwan University inspires students through a powerful combination of academic excellence and personal learning experiences. With a main campus located in culturally rich, downtown Edmonton, our comprehensive undergraduate university offers over 65 programs to approximately 12,000 students. Construction is currently underway on a new Centre for Arts and Culture slated to open in 2017. With a dedication to teaching excellence informed by scholarly research and creative activity, MacEwan provides an exceptional collaborative and supportive learning environment with a commitment to environmental sustainability and opportunities for community engagement. In support of faculty professional development, unique and enhanced services are provided through the Centre for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence (CAFÉ).

The Theatre Arts Program in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications (FFAC) invites applications for a full-time probationary appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2015, subject to final budgetary approval. The new hire will teach in a well-established musical theatre based program. Plans are currently underway to develop a bachelor’s degree in theatre.

The successful candidate will oversee the vocal production program in Theatre Arts. They are expected to teach and accompany private voice lessons for music theatre (contemporary commercial music, legit and belt styles) and have a broad knowledge of musical theatre styles and repertoire. They are also responsible for the coordination of vocal faculty, scheduling, as well as the development and management of the vocal curriculum. A strong background in vocal technique as it applies to music theatre is a necessity.

Responsibilities may include classroom instruction in music theatre history, music direction of main-stage and workshop productions as well as coaching of small and large ensembles. The successful applicant must have a strong interest in teaching as a career priority and an ability to work in a collegial environment.

There is also an expectation of scholarly and/or creative work, committee service, and other administrative responsibilities.

Candidates will hold a minimum of a master’s degree credential (an MA or MFA in theatre or a related discipline) and will demonstrate a primary commitment to undergraduate teaching and an ongoing research program. Significant teaching experience in a post-secondary environment is highly desirable as is professional performing experience.

A review of applications will begin on February 27, 2015 and will continue until a suitable candidate is found.

Questions about this opportunity may be addressed to Jim Guedo (GuedoJ@macewan.ca), Chair of Theatre Arts.

This position is included under the Faculty Association collective agreement.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
