Head of Scenic Arts – Canadian Badlands Passion Play

Location and Contract

Drumheller, Alberta
Contract: May 7 – July 27, 2018 (temporary, full‑time)

Job Description

The Badlands Passion Play is seeking an experienced Head of Scenic Arts to oversee all scenic production during our 2018 summer season.

Duties
  • Oversee the timely completion of all props, set pieces, special effects, and rigging needed by the production, including repair, rebuild, or modification of existing pieces.
  • Manage the scenic art department, including the care, maintenance, and inventory of all assets.
  • Prepare and track the department budget, reporting status to the Production Manager.
  • Participate in Leadership Team and weekly production meetings.
  • Ensure health and safety compliance, including the use of steel‑toed footwear and safe workshop conditions.
  • Supervise scenic assistants and volunteer helpers in the assembly of scenic elements for the show.
  • Source and purchase set pieces or parts that cannot be built in‑house.
  • Collaborate with the Scenic Designer and Production Manager to move, install, and support set pieces during rehearsals and performances.
  • Provide emergency repairs and support during the run of the show.
  • Oversee pre‑setting, striking of set pieces, props, and effects during performance and the annual strike week that follows the season.
  • Perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications and Required Skills
  • Enjoy working in a challenging creative environment with a large volunteer cast, animals, extreme weather, and tight schedules.
  • Willingness and physical ability to walk a 60‑acre outdoor set.
  • Training, ability, and experience in scenic arts (construction, fabrication, painting, welding, rigging, etc.).
  • Experience interpreting technical designs and drawings from a Scenic Designer and Production Manager.
  • Production scheduling/planning/staffing experience.
  • Experience with animals, volunteer actors, and outdoor theatre is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
