Job summary

University of Niagara Falls Canada (UNF) is hiring an IT Technician (Tier 1) to support faculty, staff, and students onsite at our Niagara Falls campus. The role covers hardware/software troubleshooting, endpoint deployment, Microsoft 365 support, and asset management.

The candidate will assist with AV, classroom tech, and student residence IT, while helping onboarding/offboarding and incident response. Flexible schedule and a customer-focused approach are valued.

Qualifications

  • Academic background in Computer Science/IT (technical diploma/post-secondary)
  • Understanding of computer systems & networks
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Superior customer service and communication skills
  • Experience with Office 365 and VOIP

  • Flexible schedule (evenings/weekends possible)

Responsibilities

  • Provide Tier 1 IT support to faculty, staff, and students in person, remotely, by phone, and through the IT service desk.
  • Install, configure, deploy, troubleshoot, and maintain laptops, desktops, printers, peripherals, and approved software across Windows and macOS.
  • Support Microsoft 365, user accounts, passwords, MFA, SSO, email, and basic access-related issues.
  • Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, printing, Wi‑Fi, wired network, and endpoint connectivity issues.
  • Provide Classroom AV and technology support for instructor workstations, displays, projectors, and teaching tech.
  • Provide onsite IT support at student residences, including troubleshooting Wi‑Fi/network connectivity and university‑managed devices.
  • Support employee onboarding/offboarding, including device prep, deployment, collection, accounts, and equipment reassignment.
  • Maintain IT asset inventory and assist with device lifecycle management, repairs, and vendor coordination.
  • Manage Tier 1 incidents and service requests through ITSM/help desk, escalating Tier 2/3 as needed.
  • Identify cybersecurity concerns, including phishing, malware, compromised accounts, and suspicious activity.
  • Provide tech support for campus offices, labs, meetings, events, classrooms, and other environments.
  • Maintain technical documentation, knowledge-base articles, troubleshooting guides, and SOPs.

Position Overview

The IT Technician (Tier 1) provides frontline technical support to faculty, staff, and students across the University of Niagara Falls Canada. The position is responsible for supporting day-to-day IT operations, including hardware and software troubleshooting, endpoint deployment and maintenance, Microsoft 365 support, user account assistance, network connectivity, printing, and IT asset management.


The role also provides technical support for classroom and audiovisual (AV) technologies, university offices and labs, and student residences, including onsite troubleshooting when required. The IT Technician supports employee onboarding and offboarding, responds to incidents and service requests through the IT service desk, and escalates complex technical or cybersecurity issues to senior IT personnel.


The position plays an important role in maintaining reliable, secure, and responsive IT services while delivering a high level of technical support and customer service to the university community.


Primary Purpose


  • Provide Tier 1 technical support to faculty, staff, and students in person, remotely, by phone, and through the IT service desk.

  • Install, configure, deploy, troubleshoot, and maintain university laptops, desktops, printers, peripherals, and approved software across Windows and macOS environments.

  • Support Microsoft 365, user accounts, passwords, MFA, SSO, email, and basic access-related issues, escalating privileged or complex requests as required.

  • Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, printing, Wi‑Fi, wired network, and endpoint connectivity issues.

  • Provide Classroom AV and technology support, including instructor workstations, displays, projectors, presentation systems, and other teaching technologies.

  • Provide onsite IT support at student residences, including troubleshooting Wi‑Fi/network connectivity, university‑managed devices, and other supported technology.

  • Support employee onboarding and offboarding, including device preparation, deployment, collection, account/access coordination, and equipment reassignment.

  • Maintain accurate IT asset inventory and assist with device lifecycle management, hardware refreshes, repairs, and warranty/vendor coordination.

  • Manage Tier 1 incidents and service requests through the ITSM/help desk system, maintaining appropriate documentation and escalating Tier 2/3 issues when required.

  • Identify and elevate cybersecurity concerns, including phishing, malware, compromised accounts, and suspicious activity.

  • Provide technical support for university offices, labs, meetings, events, classrooms, and other campus technology environments.

  • Maintain technical documentation, knowledge‑base articles, troubleshooting guides, and standard operating procedures.

  • Participate in IT projects, software deployments, classroom upgrades, preventative maintenance, and other technology initiatives as assigned.

  • Follow university IT, cybersecurity, data protection, software licensing, and acceptable‑use policies.


Position Requirements


  • Ability to work on a flexible schedule.

  • Academic background in Computer Science/IT (technical diploma/post‑secondary education)

  • Understanding of Computer Systems & Networks

  • Strong Problem solver with excellent troubleshooting skills

  • Superior customer service and communication skills

  • Be available to work on a flexible schedule (evenings and weekends are a possibility)

  • 1+ year(s) of experience servicing computer equipment/servicing users with technical issues is an asset.

  • OEM certifications

  • Experience with Office 365 and VOIP phone experience

  • Familiar with Helpdesk Ticketing System
