Job summary

A municipal government agency in Iqaluit is seeking an experienced Interpreter/Translator proficient in English and Inuktitut. This full-time permanent role involves interpreting at meetings and translating important documents to aid communication between staff and the public. Overview

The City of Iqaluit is looking for an experienced Interpreter/Translator with exceptional skills to join our team. Title: Interpreter/Translator. Department: Administration. Status: Full-time permanent. Salary: 38.74 per hour. Union Status: Unionized. Closing Date: Open until filled. Settlement Allowance: 20,907.43 per annum. This employment opportunity is open to Nunavut Inuit only.

Role

The Interpreter/Translator acts as an interpreter, using English and South Baffin Dialect Inuktitut languages, at meetings and also translates council and committee meeting minutes and correspondence to ensure proper communication between Councillors, staff and the public.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Good knowledge of computer and other office equipment
  • Good ability to use computerized translation software
  • Strong keyboarding skills with high speed and accuracy
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in Inuktitut and English, with thorough knowledge of spelling and punctuation
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities/tasks while meeting deadlines
  • Flexible availability including evenings is required for this role
Education, Experience & Requirements

Minimum Level of Education/Training: Grade 12 or equivalent plus additional training in translation and simultaneous interpretation equipment.

Minimum Level of Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience in an Interpreter/Translator related role.

Assets
  • Completion of a recognized Interpreter/Translator program
  • Ability to understand basic technical terminology for City Operating Services (Planning and Lands, Recreation, Fire and Engineering Services)
  • French language
Additional Requirements
  • The ability to work evenings in addition to regular workdays when needed for meetings of Council
Security
  • Due to confidentiality, a criminal record check is required
Indigenous Language
  • Required

Note: Equivalencies that include a combination of education and experience may be considered at the time of selecting candidates when the requisite skill attainment can be demonstrated.

Certifications: All relevant certifications are required at time of application. The successful candidate would be required to submit a Criminal Record Check.
