Stantec in Canada, Alberta, Lethbridge, is seeking an experienced Water Resources Engineer (Alberta and Saskatchewan) to support irrigation design, hydrological analysis, and related water infrastructure projects. The role includes leading designs, coordinating with teams, and mentoring junior staff.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years in irrigation and water conveyance, with a Bachelors in Engineering and P.Eng in Alberta. Office-based with field components; home or travel may be involved.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience on water conveyance projects, with irrigation focus.
- Registered as a P.Eng with APEGA in Alberta.
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
Responsibilities
- Prepare engineering reports, drawings, and specifications for irrigation planning and related water conveyance projects.
- Lead project designs from concept through detailed design and construction.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams and provide design direction.
- Undertake field investigations when required.
- Assist in proposal preparation.

Our Western Canada Irrigation Team has an opportunity for a Water Resources Engineer (Alberta and Saskatchewan) who will support our irrigation team on agricultural irrigation design, hydrological analysis, hydraulic structure designs, watercourse flood modelling and mapping, pipeline networks, and pump station designs. In addition, there may be opportunities to assist our broader Water Resources Team depending on the candidates preferences.
You will perform a variety of tasks which may include research for up-to-date techniques, design calculations, hydraulic and hydrological modeling, field work, project coordination, project management, reporting, and meeting attendance and recording.
As an intermediate engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing junior staff in the design of irrigation infrastructure and assist senior engineers in growing our irrigation project base. The ideal candidate will play a key role in Business Development and Client Management with irrigation clients across Western Canada.
Typical office environment working with computers and working at a desk for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements, including inclement weather.

- Preparation of engineering reports, drawings, and specifications related to irrigation planning and design and other related water conveyance projects.
- Lead project designs from conceptual engineering, through detailed design and construction.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams, clients or other consultants and provide direction on Irrigation Design standards.
- Undertake field work or field investigations where required.
- Assist in proposal preparation where required.
- Mentoring, training and/or supervision of junior engineers.
- Attend in house and formal training sessions to ensure continuing professional development.
- Adhere to Stantec’s Environmental Health and Safety protocols and processes.
- Proven irrigation system planning and design experience.
- Strong understanding of irrigation infrastructure in Western Canada.
- Experience on other related water conveyance projects considered an asset.
- Understanding of all phases of project implementation, and strong understanding of engineering design processes.
- Experienced with hydraulic analysis/modeling for both pipeline systems and hydraulic water control structures.
- Excellent communication, written, and presentation skills.
- Collaborative in nature, with ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Self-motivated and results orientated.
- Experience with the use of Microsoft Office software suite.
- Experience with design software and tools such as AutoCAD Civil3D is an asset.
- Experience with hydraulic/hydrologic modeling software (MikeUrban, PCSWMM, StormCAD, WaterCAD, XPSWMM, etc.) is an asset.
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
- The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of experience working on water conveyance projects, with a strong emphasis on irrigation planning and design.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent is required.
- Registered as a P.Eng with APEGA in the Province of Alberta.
In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
