Job summary

Stantec Winnipeg is seeking an Intermediate Water Quality Specialist / Environmental Scientist to support projects across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Western Canada. The role requires strong environmental chemistry knowledge, data interpretation, QA/QC, and clear written communication.

The position involves field travel within western Canada but is not a dedicated field role. Minimum 5 years in water quality consulting and a Bachelor's degree in Biology/Environmental Science are required;

Responsibilities

  • Participate in surface water quality field programs and laboratory data analysis.
  • Manage samples, shipping, and coordination with laboratories.
  • Contribute to SOP development and improvement of water quality workflows.
  • Assist in proposals and marketing materials, support HSE policies.

Your Opportunity

The Stantec Winnipeg (Portage Avenue) office is seeking an Intermediate Water Quality Specialist / Environmental Scientist in our Environmental Services group to support Stantec projects in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and across Western Canada.

This position will involve working on a variety of water quality projects and the candidate will require a strong understanding of environmental/aquatic chemistry, analytical result interpretation and reporting, QA/QC analysis, and be able to articulate complex environmental ideas in writing. This position is integrated into an Environmental Services team and therefore, good interpersonal communication skills are a must.

This position will require travel to the field (i.e., throughout western Canada) but is not a dedicated field role.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Developing water quality monitoring programs for various assessment project types including Environmental Impact Assessments (to support regulatory applications), as well as, Environmental Monitoring and Effects Assessments for Stantec’s industrial, municipal, oil and gas, and mining clients
  • Working collaboratively on an interdisciplinary team to complete planning and logistics in support of the execution of environmental programs including environmental assessments, water quality assessments, and hydrology programs
  • Participate in surface water quality field programs related to ongoing mining and infrastructure projects, as required.
  • Managing, shipping, and tracking samples and coordinating with laboratories
  • Manage, compile, interpret, and analyze field and laboratory data, including completion of statistical analysis, data visualization, and guideline screening.
  • Participate in Stantec-side surface water quality initiatives such as standard operating procedure (SOP) development and updating, and initiatives to streamline water quality work processes.
  • Assisting in preparing proposals and marketing materials
  • Participating in Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) policies, procedures, standards and guidelines in the execution of all work
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Understanding standard water quality data management and QA/QC procedures
  • Familiarity with regulatory water and sediment quality guidelines and guideline interpretation (i.e., basic understanding of guideline development and application)
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple responsibilities
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with good interpersonal ability (in your relationships with staff, colleagues and clients)
  • Familiarity with limnology and biophysical monitoring is an asset
Education and Experience
  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or related discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional consulting experience in water quality
  • Experience with water quality modeling is an asset

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time, as well as working in the field. Fieldwork may include remote work, long drives, 1-2 week shifts away from home, exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
