Job description

MacLean Engineering is looking to add two skilled and experienced Intermediate to Senior Autonomy Engineers to join our growing team in Barrie and Cambridge, Ontario. This is a great opportunity to be part of a growing team, team building autonomous boom automation for specialized underground mining equipment. If you are looking to be challenged, valued, and rewarded with a competitive compensation package in a dynamic work environment, this position is for you!

About the Position:

This role spans both sides of our boom automation stack, from sensing and modeling the environment a boom operates in, to controlling the boom itself with the precision needed for closed-loop, autonomous operation. You\'ll work on 3D scanning and point-cloud processing to model drift geometry, forward/inverse kinematics for hydraulically controlled manipulator arms, and encoder-based position sensing with state feedback from the joints, essentially applying industrial robotic-arm, motion-control, and mapping discipline to heavy mobile equipment. You\'ll collaborate closely with mechanical and systems engineers to bridge software and hardware and contribute to work that will eventually interface with Auto-Tram\'s navigation and localization stack.

This position requires the following proficiencies:

  • Strong software development experience in C++ and/or Python within a Linux/embedded environment
  • Comfortable reading mechanical drawings and reasoning about a physical system\'s kinematics
  • Experience with CAN-based sensor/actuator integration (e.g., J1939,CANopen)
  • Solid grounding in closed-loop control fundamentals (PID, state estimation, sensor feedback)
  • Forward and inverse kinematics for multi-DOF linkages or manipulators
  • Hydraulic or electro-mechanical actuation and servo/position control
  • Encoder-based or other absolute position sensing and feedback loop design
  • 3D scanning, point-cloud processing, or structured-environment mapping
  • Path/trajectory or coverage planning
  • Hands-on experience with ROS / ROS 2 for robotics application development
  • Working knowledge of simulation environments (e.g., Gazebo, Isaac Sim,Matlab, Simulink, andSimspace) for testing and validation
  • Experience building, deploying, or managing applications using containerization tools such as Docker as a part of dev workflow
  • Background in industrial robotic arms, CNC/motion control, or off-highway/heavy-equipment automation (e.g., grade control) is a strong asset

About You: The successful candidate(s) must be willing to learn, open-minded and flexible, organized and detail oriented, team oriented, disciplined, and must have a positive attitude, along with the following qualifications:

  • 5+ years of relevant industry or research experience in robotics, automation, or controls
  • Degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • Comfortableoperating in a small, fast-moving R&D team with evolving priorities
  • Able to work independently while communicating clearly with cross-functional stakeholders
  • Willing to travel occasionally to mine sites to observe equipment in operation
  • Track record of taking a mechanism or system from concept/model to a controlled, deployed solution

This is an onsite position 5 days per week and can be in our Barrie or Cambridge facilities.
