Job summary

The City of Thunder Bay is seeking a Civil Engineering Technologist to prepare designs and drawings for municipal infrastructure including roads, sewers and water systems. The role involves GIS data handling, contract documentation, and coordination with project engineers.

You will use AutoCAD and Civil 3D to deliver accurate layouts, assist at field sites, and contribute to as-constructed records while supporting various city divisions and consultants.

Qualifications

  • Design experience and ability to prepare construction drawings.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D is required.
  • Basic knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares designs and drawings for roads, intersections, traffic signals, pavement markings, sewers, watermains, sidewalks, bridges and drainage.
  • Prepares designs and layouts for construction projects for approval by the Project Engineer.
  • Updates maps, standard drawings and connection drawings; adds as-constructed information after projects finish.
  • Provides information to City divisions and consultants; handles inquiries by phone and in person.
  • Participates in contract documents and MOE applications; uses GIS for infrastructure databases.
  • Operates plotters and assists in collecting field data and layout of construction projects.
  • May participate in construction inspections; performs other related duties as assigned.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direct supervision of Supervisor – Design and Field Engineering or his/her delegate and the technical guidance of the Senior Technologist, prepares designs and drawings.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prepares designs and drawings for roads, intersections, traffic signals, pavement markings, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, watermains, sidewalks, bridges, culverts and drainage.
  • Prepares designs and layouts for various types of construction projects for approval by the Project Engineer.
  • Prepares and revises City maps, standard drawings, sewer and water connection drawings and “Local Improvement” drawings and adds “As-Constructed” information to drawings when projects are completed.
  • Prepares cost estimates, quantities, bills of material lists and general notes for construction projects and processes applications for private sewer and water connections.
  • Provides information to other City Divisions and Consultants, and answers telephone and counter inquires.
  • Participates in the preparation of contract documents and Ministry of the Environment applications.
  • Updates Sewer, Water and Roads Infrastructure databases, using GIS (Geographical Information System) software.
  • Operates and maintains various types of plotters used to produce construction drawings and maps.
  • Collects traffic data and assists the survey staff with the collection of as-constructed information, field data and the layout of construction projects.
  • May participate in construction inspections.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
  • Diploma in civil engineering technology; and
  • Three years’ experience related to the major responsibilities; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills/Abilities:
  • Must have design experience and be skilled in construction drawing preparation using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, engineering and mathematical formulas, tables and equations
  • A basic knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software is required
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • May be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation
