Job summary

Tetra Tech is seeking an Intermediate to Senior Project Engineer – Hydropower and Water Resources in Calgary, Alberta. The role focuses on technical leadership, coordinating multidisciplinary design, and guiding projects from development through construction to deliver critical water infrastructure.

You will work across disciplines, manage schedules and deliverables, and mentor junior engineers while collaborating with clients, regulators, and contractors to ensure design intent and compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Structural, Geotechnical, or related engineering discipline.
• P.Eng. in Canada or eligible for registration.
• 7+ years of progressive engineering experience in hydropower/water resources.
• Experience across feasibility, regulatory/permitting, concept/design, procurement and construction.
• Exposure to complex projects with regulatory, environmental and stakeholder interfaces.
• Experience preparing design basis documents and design reports.
• Proven ability to develop and maintain engineering schedules and deliverable registers.

Responsibilities

• Lead multidisciplinary engineering activities for hydropower, dam and water resources projects from planning through construction.
• Develop and own engineering deliverables including design basis documents, design reports and schedules.
• Plan and lead design reviews, drive resolution of technical issues and ensure design quality.
• Coordinate interfaces among disciplines, suppliers, contractors, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders.
• Serve as technical interface with clients, lead coordination meetings and present progress.
• Oversee document control, including deliverable registers and revision management.
• Mentor junior engineers and guide effective engineering teams.
• Guide engineering activities during construction, including RFIs and submittals.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, Structural, Geotechnical, or another engineering discipline

Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada or eligible for registration

Approximately 7+ years of progressive engineering experience

Experience with hydropower, renewable energy, dams, hydraulic structures or water resources

Experience across multiple stages of project development (feasibility to construction)

Experience with regulatory, environmental, stakeholder interfaces

Ability to coordinate design basis documents, design reports and schedules

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Position Summary

We are currently seeking an Intermediate to Senior Project Engineer – Hydropower and Water Resources to join our team. This is an opportunity to take a meaningful role in the delivery of nationally important infrastructure and help guide the outcomes of complex hydropower and water resources projects across Canada and the US. This is a technical leadership role, not a traditional project management position. The Project Engineer will be responsible for coordinating multidisciplinary engineering activities and aligning the work of the design team towards the project goals and objectives. You will work across engineering disciplines, understand how the different parts of the project interact, establish priorities, drive technical issues toward resolution, and help guide projects from early development and design through construction. Our portfolio includes new hydropower developments, rehabilitation and life‑extension of existing facilities, dams and water infrastructure, and remote projects involving complex technical, construction, environmental, and regulatory challenges. The diversity of this work provides opportunities to solve unique engineering problems and influence how waterpower infrastructure is planned, designed, and constructed. The Project Engineer will work closely with Project Managers, discipline leads, and technical specialists while taking ownership of the overall execution of engineering activities. You will lead key project‑wide engineering deliverables and processes, including design basis documents, design reports, engineering schedules, design reviews, interface coordination, engineering quality processes, and technical risk management. You will also be a key technical interface with our clients and will work directly with contractors, suppliers, regulatory specialists, and other project stakeholders. Opportunities to participate directly in engineering design will also be available based on your experience and interests. This provides an opportunity to rapidly expand your understanding beyond your original area of expertise while developing the judgment and leadership skills required to guide increasingly complex engineering assignments. We are open to hiring either a strong intermediate engineer who is ready to grow into greater technical and coordination authority, or a senior engineer who can immediately take a leading role in design. Essential Job Functions

• Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities for hydropower, dam, and water resources projects from planning and feasibility through detailed design and construction.
• Own and lead the development of engineering deliverables, including design basis documents, design reports, engineering schedules, risk assessment, and project‑wide technical documentation.
• Establish and drive engineering priorities, deliverable schedules, required inputs, interdisciplinary interfaces, review periods, and issue dates in coordination with the Project Manager and discipline leads.
• Plan and lead multidisciplinary design reviews and drive review comments and technical issues through resolution.
• Guide implementation of project engineering quality processes, including interdisciplinary reviews, checking and approval workflows, design verification, engineering change management, and controlled document issuance.
• Identify and manage interfaces between engineering disciplines, suppliers, contractors, regulatory requirements, environmental requirements, and other project stakeholders.
• Serve as a key technical interface with clients, leading engineering coordination meetings, presenting design progress, communicating technical issues and risks, and driving resolution of client comments.
• Oversee the engineering aspects of document control, including deliverable registers, revision management, review workflows, document status, and controlled issuance of engineering deliverables.
• Coordinate with the Project Manager and discipline leads, identifying resource, schedule, scope, and budget concerns and establishing appropriate technical priorities.
• Lead the engineering coordination of supply and construction tender packages, including drawings, specifications, scopes of work, technical requirements, technical evaluations, and clarifications.
• Guide engineering activities during construction, including RFIs, contractor submittals, field changes, non‑conformances, and design clarifications.
• Coordinate directly with contractors and field personnel to resolve construction issues while maintaining design intent, engineering quality, and applicable project requirements.
• Perform or contribute to technical design and analysis within the candidate's area of expertise where appropriate.
• Guide and mentor junior engineers and contribute to the development of effective engineering teams.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, Structural, Geotechnical, or another engineering discipline relevant to hydropower development.
• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada or eligible for registration.
• Approximately 7+ years of progressive engineering experience, with flexibility for candidates whose experience demonstrates the required level of responsibility.
• Experience with the following areas will be an asset:
• Engineering background associated with hydropower, renewable energy, dams, hydraulic structures, waterways, or water resources.
• Experience working through multiple stages of project development, such as feasibility, regulatory/permitting support, concept design, detailed design, procurement, and construction.
• Experience on complex projects involving significant regulatory, environmental, stakeholder, or permitting interfaces.
• Experience preparing and coordinating design basis documents and design reports.
• Experience developing and maintaining engineering schedules and deliverable registers.
• Experience facilitating design reviews, constructability reviews, risk assessments, or technical workshops.
• Experience with construction tendering, including preparation of technical tender packages, bidder clarifications, technical evaluations, and procurement support.
• Experience preparing regulatory submission documents.
• Experience working directly with owners, contractors, equipment suppliers, regulatory consultants, and other external stakeholders.
• Strong understanding of engineering design processes and engineering document‑control procedures.
• Experience preparing engineering calculations, reports, design documentation, and technical specifications.
• Experience with engineering and/or construction quality‑management processes.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients and technical teams.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate numerous technical interfaces, actions, inputs, and deliverables concurrently.
• Demonstrated initiative, accountability, sound engineering judgment, and ability to independently drive technical issues toward resolution.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within project teams.
• Ability and willingness to develop an understanding of engineering disciplines outside the candidate's primary technical background.
• Strong knowledge of Canadian engineering codes, ASME, CSA, hydraulic steel structures, pressure piping, and hydro‑mechanical equipment.
• Willingness to travel periodically to project sites across North America.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit or stand as required and remain in a stationary position for at least 50% of the workday.
• Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle, manipulate, or feel objects, including continuous operation of a computer and other standard office equipment such as calculators, copiers, and printers.

Work Environment / Environmental Factors

• The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting.
• Periodic travel may be required and could involve limited exposure to extreme temperatures. Travel may include air travel, during which the employee may be required to remain seated for extended periods.
