Job summary

Stantec in Edmonton, AB, Canada, and multiple hybrid sites is seeking an experienced Intermediate Project Controller for the Energy & Resources team. You will develop, maintain, and optimize project cost baselines, EVM performance, and forecasts across engineering, procurement, and construction initiatives.

The role requires guiding project managers, identifying cost risks, and supporting data-driven decisions across a broad energy, mining, and infrastructure portfolio.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or technical diploma in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, Project Controls, Finance, Business, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5–8 years of project controls experience with a focus on cost control on medium‑to‑large projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in Energy & Resources projects, including mining, power generation, transmission and distribution, renewable energy, industrial facilities, oil and gas, or major infrastructure projects.
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Excel and cost management tools (e.g., Ecosys, Prism, SAP, Oracle, Cobra, or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of Earned Value Management (EVM) principles and forecasting methodologies.
  • Solid understanding of engineering, procurement, construction, and project delivery processes.
  • Working knowledge of change management, cost trending, and variance analysis techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and control project cost baselines from concept through execution and project closeout.
  • Establish Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), Cost Breakdown Structures (CBS), and control accounts aligned with project execution strategies.
  • Track commitments, actuals, accruals, and expenditures against approved budgets.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineering leads, procurement teams, construction managers, contractors, and clients to ensure cost data accuracy and integrity.
  • Validate cost baselines and ensure they accurately reflect project scope and delivery requirements.
  • Establish and maintain project cost management plans and change control logs.
  • Implement and maintain EVM systems.
  • Calculate and analyze key EVM metrics (CPI, SPI, CV, SV, EAC, ETC, VAC) and communicate performance trends.
  • Prepare cost forecasts, Estimate at Completion (EAC), and Estimate to Complete (ETC) analyses.
  • Perform trend analysis, variance analysis, and cost‑to‑complete assessments.
  • Conduct what‑if analyses and scenario evaluations to assess cost impacts of alternative execution approaches.
  • Assess the cost impacts of scope changes, delays, productivity issues, and emerging project risks.
  • Work closely with project management, scheduling, commercial and risk management teams to ensure cost alignment with overall project objectives.
  • Support progress measurement, performance reporting, and integrated project controls processes.
  • Contribute to the development of progress measurement systems and reporting frameworks.
  • Participate in risk workshops and contribute cost‑related risk assessments and contingency evaluations.
  • Manage and/or support change management processes.
  • Facilitate cost review meetings with project teams, contractors, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Review and evaluate contractor and vendor cost submissions, invoices, and change orders for compliance and contractual requirements.
  • Prepare executive‑level cost reports, dashboards, forecasts, and presentations.
  • Clearly communicate cost status, critical issues, emerging risks, and recommended actions to project leadership.
  • Support and promote best practices in cost control, EVM, and forecasting.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of project controls standards, procedures, and tools.
  • Provide informal guidance to junior project controls personnel and support knowledge sharing across the team.

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Intermediate Project Controller to join our Energy & Resources team. This role is responsible for developing, maintaining, analyzing, and optimizing project cost baselines, earned value performance, and forecasts across engineering, procurement, and construction projects.

The successful candidate will be more than a cost specialist, they will serve as a trusted advisor to project managers and project teams, helping drive project execution strategies, identifying cost risks and opportunities, and supporting informed decision‑making throughout the project lifecycle.

This position is ideal for an experienced project controls professional with a strong understanding of cost management, earned value management (EVM), and forecasting, along with a general awareness of scheduling principles, within the energy, mining, industrial, power, transmission, renewable energy, or major infrastructure sectors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, and control project cost baselines from concept through execution and project closeout.

  • Minimum 5–8 years of project controls experience with a focus on cost control on medium‑to‑large projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in Energy & Resources projects, including mining, power generation, transmission and distribution, renewable energy, industrial facilities, oil and gas, or major infrastructure projects.
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Excel and cost management tools (e.g., Ecosys, Prism, SAP, Oracle, Cobra, or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of Earned Value Management (EVM) principles and forecasting methodologies.
  • Solid understanding of engineering, procurement, construction, and project delivery processes.
  • Working knowledge of change management, cost trending, and variance analysis techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
  • General understanding of scheduling principles and CPM logic (Primavera P6 or MS Project familiarity is an asset, but not mandatory).
  • AACE certification (CCP, EVP), PMI‑SP, PMP, or equivalent professional designation.
  • Experience with Power BI or other data visualization tools for cost reporting and dashboards.
  • Experience reviewing and managing contractor cost submissions and change orders.
  • Experience working in EPC, EPCM, owner’s representative, or consulting environments.
  • Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail.
  • Solid problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities.
  • Ability to identify cost risks and develop practical mitigation strategies.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to challenge assumptions and influence project execution decisions.
  • Collaborative mindset with willingness to mentor and support junior team members.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

Pay Transparency:In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part‑time roles will be pro‑rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
