Job summary

Stantec seeks an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer to join the Water Building Mechanical Discipline in Calgary or Edmonton. You will design HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection systems for industrial and municipal facilities in the US and Canada, with major focus on water treatment and wastewater plants.

You will collaborate with multiple disciplines, develop design documents, review codes, and support construction. A Canadian P.Eng. or eligibility is required with 7+ years' experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) required.
• At least 7 years of hands-on HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection design in Water/Wastewater.
• Licensed professional engineer in Canada is a must; ability to license in other provinces is desirable.
• PE license in the US is an asset or plan to obtain within 1–2 years.
• Experience with building services design codes and standards, including NFPA 820.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support studies and design development for municipal water and wastewater projects.
• Develop drawings, specifications, design criteria, and technical reports.
• Coordinate with US and Canadian teams and other disciplines.
• Review codes and apply NFPA 820 and local standards.
• Model buildings in load calculation software and prepare design documents.
• Provide field support and construction-phase services (ESDC).
• Mentor junior staff and CAD team; conduct site visits as needed.

Stantec Building Mechanical Water Team is seeking a motivated Intermediate Mechanical Engineer to join the Water Building Mechanical Discipline team in Calgary or Edmonton. In this role, you will design HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection systems for industrial and municipal facilities in US and Canada. Majority of our projects are water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, storm water collection and pumping facilities for which you will design high quality, reliable, and efficient mechanical systems. You will design these systems for some of the most innovative and unique projects in the water industry in the world.

In this role, you will work with team members in US and Canada. You will also work with other disciplines including but not limited to electrical engineers, process engineers, structural engineers, architects, and civil engineers in order to provide a well-coordinated design. You will continuously receive new projects with unique design criteria which require critical thinking, creativity, and innovation in design.

Primary Responsibilities

• Apply your expertise in leading and supporting studies, various levels of design development, services during construction for small and medium municipal water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
• Develop design documents such as drawings, specifications, design criteria, and technical reports.
• Review and apply Local and International mechanical and plumbing codes and standards.
• Review and apply NFPA 820 on wastewater treatment facilities
• Model buildings in load calculation software such as HAP 6.1 and Trace 3D.
• Design and analyze air and hydronic distribution systems (duct system and piping system)
• Determine equipment size, and select equipment by using selection software, using manufacturer’s catalogs, and working with vendors.
• Design sequence of operation for various mechanical systems
• Design HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection systems using Revit if needed.
• Provide engineering services during construction (ESDC) such as submittal review and response to request for information (RFI)
• Assist and oversee junior staff and CAD team to develop design drawings, reports, specifications.
• Site visits for local projects which are under construction.
• Site visits in other parts of Canada and US, approximately 5% of the time.

Position Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME)
• At least 7 years of hands-on experience in HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection design in Water and Wastewater industry
• Licensed professional engineer in Canada is a must
• Capability to gain license in other provinces in Canada within 6 months of employment is desirable
• P.E license (in any state in the US) is an asset. Or ability to obtain within 1-2 years from the date of employment is desirable.
• Strong background with heating or cooling load calculation program such as HAP, Trane Trace, Trace 3D Plus, or IES
• Strong understanding of Local and International mechanical and plumbing codes and standards
• Strong understanding of NFPA 820.
• Experience with Revit, and AutoCAD.
• Understanding of NFPA 13 is a plus.

Pay Transparency

In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
