Job summary

Stantec in Ottawa is seeking an engineer to lead civil design on land development projects. You will serve as Engineer‑of‑Record, perform complex design tasks, prepare documentation, and coordinate with clients, regulators, and external consultants.

You will mentor junior staff, manage scope and budget, and support proposals and project communications. A P.Eng. in Ontario and 5+ years of land development experience are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university program.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in land development projects is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Work on multiple projects and be responsible for projects of average complexity/size.
  • Serve as Engineer‑of‑Record.
  • Perform complex engineering design tasks on assigned projects under supervision of the Project Technical Lead or Project Manager, including engineering drawings, engineering reports, presentations, and applications to regulatory agencies.
  • Engage in the development of design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
  • Prepare and revise documentation in various civil phases including servicing plans, plan and profiles, grading plans, cross sections, diagrams, and details.
  • Lead project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owner and contractor, sub‑contractors, and vendors.
  • Participate in client meetings, value analysis and cost estimating.
  • Involved in the approval and permitting process of projects, which may require meetings with clients, contractors, reviewing agency personnel and governing entities.
  • Manage and lead other team members while working on projects; complete tasks and delegate specific project tasks to other team members as appropriate.
  • Assist project manager with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule.
  • Assist in the preparation and coordination of the project specifications and construction documents.
  • Prepare contract documents for construction (i.e. engineering drawings and specifications).
  • May conduct construction inspection services.
  • Support the civil team in providing services during construction that can include submittal reviews, responses to requests for information and contract document clarifications.
  • Participate in constructability review.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality review.
  • Support proposals, change orders, and project communications.

Your Key Responsibilities

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Strong understanding of relevant areas of civil engineering design, including gravity and pressure systems, grading and storm water management, roadway design, erosion and sediment control.
  • Excellent time management skills; thorough understanding of task assignments and schedule, budgeting and efficient use of time and resources.
  • Ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and review agencies.
  • Thorough understanding of standards, legal and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions.
  • Well‑developed understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, and AutoCAD.
  • Proficiency with PCSWMM modeling software.
  • Ability to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
  • Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
  • Ability to administer and inspect construction activities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Able to work in a team environment.
  • Supervising and mentoring junior staff across a range of technical and professional development levels.
  • Coordinating with engineers, technical staff and/or team members in various disciplines to ensure that the projects’ needs are met in a timely and effective manner.
  • Serving as a technical expert during liaison with landowners, municipal/agency staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Use of a vehicle and valid driver’s license.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (both verbal and written) are essential.
Education and Experience

Pay Range

Locations in Lower Mainland - BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario: $94,600.00 - $137,100.00 Annually.

Pay Transparency

In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part‑time roles will be pro‑rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
