Job summary

Yabu Pushelberg in Toronto is seeking a junior to intermediate interior designer to contribute to a diverse mix of luxury retail, hospitality and workplace projects. You will collaborate with senior designers to develop concept design, create sketches, renderings, and buildable drawings while refining finish selections.

The role emphasizes hands-on learning, cross-disciplinary coordination with lighting and MEP consultants, and mentoring entry-level designers.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in interior design or related field.
  • Junior designer with no or 0–2 years experience acceptable; 2+ years for intermediate level.
  • Proficiency with CAD/3D tools and rendering basics.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate on concept design through planning, sketching, and renderings.
  • Coordinate samples, furniture direction, and finish selections.
  • Develop buildable drawings in design development and construction documents.
  • Coordinate with lighting, MEP, and other consultants for integrated designs.
  • Review progress with Design Director and Principals.
  • Mentor junior designers as part of team growth.

Key Areas of Responsibility:
Concept:
  • Collaborate in the development of concept design through planning, sketching, rendering.
  • Select directional images, and finishes.
  • Review with Design Director Project Leaders, Senior Directors and/or Principals.
Schematic:
  • Acquire and coordinate samples from vendors.
  • Formulate furniture direction.
  • Further develop concept design with sketches, thumbnails, plans and the creation of specialty finishes.
  • Refine finish selections.
  • Review with Design Director, Project Leaders, Senior Directors and/or Principals.
Design Development:
  • Flush out and refine the approved design language into buildable drawings.
  • Assist in any information the Spec department may require.
  • Review and implement design specifications with the Spec department, re: FF&E, hardware, plumbing, and architectural finishes.
  • Coordinate with outside project consultants such as lighting, MEP, Structural, Signage, kitchen consultants etc, as necessary to complete a well-coordinated project.
  • Review with Design Director, Project Leaders, Senior Directors and/or Principals.
Construction Documents:
  • Work with Project Management in the development of specialty custom built items.
  • Develop a complete drawing package, including detailing, elevations, and plans as per Yabu Pushelberg Office Cad Standards.
  • Compilation and finalization of all FF&E pieces with sufficient information to pass through to the Specification Department.
  • Develop a small drawing package including full design intent of all millwork and custom furniture as per Yabu Pushelberg Office Cad Standards.
  • Continue Coordination with outside project consultants such as lighting, MEP, Structural, Signage, kitchen consultants etc, as necessary to complete a well-coordinated project.
  • Review and implement necessary changes and additions with the Spec department, re: FF&E, hardware, plumbing, and architectural finishes.
  • Review with Design Director, Project Leaders, and Project Manager.
Construction Administration:
  • Provide sufficient information when requested by the Project Management team in the development of budgets.
  • Answer vendor/contractor’s questions.
  • Review Shop Drawings and Submittals.
  • Provide site clarifications when necessary.
  • Review with Project Manager, Design Director and Project Leaders.
Mentoring Entry Level Designers:
  • Share and pass on design knowledge to Junior Designers.
Qualifications:
  • At minimum an Associate’s Degree in a related field of Design (Interior design, Architecture, Industrial Design, Fashion design, etc.)
  • No work experience necessary (Junior Designer) and 2+ years of work experience necessary (Intermediate Designer).
  • Entry level knowledge (Junior Designers) and adequate knowledge (Intermediate Designer) of the Interior Design profession.
  • AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch up and b&w hand rendering skills are necessary (Intermediate Designer) and within 3 months starting the position (Junior Designer).
  • Additional 3D software skills are an asset.
