Job summary

GHD in Canada is seeking an Intermediate Fire Protection Engineer for its Waterloo or GTA offices. You’ll contribute to fire protection system design across alarms, sprinklers, standpipes, and clean agent systems while collaborating with architects and engineers in a hybrid work model.

The role also involves fire risk assessments, code compliance, inspections, and documentation, plus mentoring junior engineers and supporting proposals and project management to meet milestones.

Qualifications

  • B.Sc. degree in Fire Protection Engineering or related field.
  • Valid P. Eng. License in Ontario; Quebec eligibility is asset.
  • 5–8 years of experience in water- and non-water-based fire protection systems.
  • Knowledge of NFPA, NFC, IFC, OBC and related codes.
  • CFD modelling and smoke management experience is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Design and review fire protection systems (alarms, sprinklers, standpipes, clean agent).
  • Perform fire risk assessments and mitigate hazards; evaluate egress and fire resistance.
  • Ensure code compliance; provide recommendations to achieve compliance.
  • Review plans with architects and engineers during design/construction.

  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to proposals and client management.

GHD has openings for an Intermediate Fire Protection Engineer in our Waterloo or GTA offices. The position will support a wide variety of projects involving code consulting, system design/evaluation, fire modelling, etc. for a diverse group of clientele in Canada.

Working with an energetic and high-performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
  • Fire Protection System Design: Develop and review fire protection system designs, including fire alarms, sprinklers, standpipe, and clean agent systems. Ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Fire Risk Assessment: Conduct fire risk assessments to identify potential hazards, assess their impact, and develop mitigation strategies. Evaluate occupant egress routes, fire separations, and the fire resistance ratings of building components.
  • Code Compliance: Stay updated with fire safety codes, regulations, and industry best practices. Interpret and apply applicable codes to assess the compliance of buildings and systems. Provide recommendations for achieving compliance.
  • Review architectural and engineering plans to identify fire and life safety concerns. Collaborate with architects, engineers, and contractors to address fire protection requirements during the design and construction phases.
  • Inspections and Testing: Perform inspections and tests of fire protection systems to ensure proper functionality and compliance. Identify deficiencies, recommend corrective actions, and verify their implementation.
  • Conduct drills and exercises to assess the effectiveness of emergency procedures.
  • Technical Documentation: Prepare technical reports, specifications, and drawings related to fire protection systems. Maintain accurate records of inspections, tests, maintenance activities, safety systems, and recommended enhancements.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay informed about advancements in fire protection technologies and methodologies. Identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Familiar with National, Provincial and Municipal Codes and Standards. Ensure the design documents meet established project criteria and applicable standards. Coordinate the preparation of engineering specifications and drawings.
  • Responsible for researching and implementing new technology designs to meet clients' objectives. Utilizes industry-specific software and related technologies in design and analysis.
  • Participate in client management, business development, and proposal preparation activities.
  • Project management, including financial review, maintaining the budget, and meeting milestones and deliverables.
  • Attending design and coordination meetings.
  • Peer review of junior engineers' work
  • Mentor and assist a high-performing team of Junior Engineers
What you’ll bring to the Team:
  • B.Sc. Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Valid P. Eng. License in Ontario. Eligibility to practice in Quebec is an asset.
  • Professional certifications (e.g., Certified Fire Protection Specialists, fire inspector) are advantageous.
  • 5 - 8 years of relevant experience in the evaluation and design of water-based fire protection systems, non-water-based fire protection systems, fire alarm systems, building and life safety systems assessment, inspection and acceptance testing, fire pump selection and water demand calculation in healthcare, commercial, industrial and institutional projects.
  • Interpretation and application of building and fire codes, including but not limited to NFPA, NFC, IFC, OFC, OBC, etc.
  • CFD modelling and smoke management are advantageous.
  • Design software, hydraulic calculation, and CAD tools.
  • Ability to work on several projects at a time with multiple design teams,
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral – including report writing and preparation of competitive proposals.
  • Responsible for taking design projects from start to finish and applying high technical, professional engineering and consulting expertise.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to assess fire risks and develop effective solutions.

The salary range for this position is $$74,025 - $123,375. The posted salary range represents the expected hiring range for GHD locations in its major city centres. Ranges may vary for positions in other locations. At GHD, base salary is determined by your skills, experience, qualifications and work location.
