We are a small engineering firm based in Waterloo, founded in 2015, that supplies energy / electricity engineering services to the ICI and agricultural sector. The company is in a strong growth pattern, and seeks an intermediate level fire alarm design specialist to grow with the business.

Working Conditions
  • Design work will be done in the Waterloo office at Den 1880, a boutique co-working office space that inspires collaboration and a community of professionals
  • Site visits will be required. Our clients are typically within a 90-minute drive of Waterloo, but some range as far as Eastern Ontario. Employees must have access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s license
  • Field work will require the use of the provided personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety shoes / glasses)
  • The core schedule is a 40‑hour work week, with hours from 8am‑4pm Monday to Friday but may be adjusted as needed on a case‑by‑case basis
Duties
  • Design fire alarm systems in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements, including preparation of ULC S1001 integrated systems testing reports under the direction of the lead engineer.
  • Prepare drawings, schematics, and system layouts to support design submissions, permit applications, and construction packages.
  • Attend site meetings and conduct client visits to review existing conditions, gather technical requirements, and clarify project scope.
  • Perform site surveys and inspections to verify installation feasibility, equipment locations, and compliance with design intent.
  • Research and review project specifications, codes, and manufacturer documentation to select appropriate devices, control panels, and communication equipment.
  • Coordinate with consultants, contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) to ensure designs meet regulatory requirements and project expectations.
  • Assist in preparing technical reports and documentation, including design basis reports, equipment schedules, and compliance checklists.
  • Support the lead engineer in project execution, including responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and participating in commissioning activities.
About You
  • Must have a background in fire alarm and an understanding of applicable codes
  • Ability to solve problems, research information, and find answers independently
  • Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail, personable, works independently
  • Knowledge of CAD
  • Familiarity with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code an asset
  • Eligibility for a Professional Engineering license is preferred but not required
  • Candidate will be reporting to P.Eng, as such there will be the opportunity to gain experience towards license requirements Qualifications and Skills
