Job summary

Stantec in Waterloo, ON is seeking an Intermediate Electrical Designer/Technologist to join the Energy and Resources team. You will contribute to design and drafting across power generation, distribution, oil & gas, mining, and renewables.

Under supervision, you will develop design documentation and coordinate with architects, engineers and clients to ensure CAD and MicroStation deliverables meet codes and standards while maintaining strong safety practices.

Qualifications

  • College diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology required.
  • Experience with CAD drawing standards and project documentation.
  • Knowledge of CSA electrical codes is an asset.
  • 3–5 years of consulting field experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with design activities for buildings and electrical distribution systems.

We are currently seeking a full-time intermediate level Electrical Technician/Technologist, to join our Energy and Resources Team. You will have the opportunity to join our Integrated Design team providing project design support through our entire Energy and Resources operating unit. This includes exposure to industry sectors such as Power Generation and Distribution, Oil & Gas, Mining, and the rapidly growing renewable energy sector and energy transition projects across North America.
As an Electrical Technologist, your role is to work with direct supervision and general direction on tasks and smaller projects, and as a team member of a larger project under the guidance of a senior Technologist or Engineer.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of an Engineer/Technologist, assist with engineering design activities for projects of various complexity/sizes supporting design for buildings, underground electrical distribution systems, lighting, and wiring means. Complete tasks as assigned in a timely, thorough, and organized manner. Tasks may include, but are not limited to:
  • Perform thorough quality control (QA/QC) of models and sheet files for standards compliance, discipline coordination and ensures comments have been addressed by the responsible CAD Technician and others as required.
  • Ensure that all drafting work is completed accurately, on time, and within budget.
  • Review and check drafting work for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards and codes.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to drafting personnel.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and designers to ensure that all drafting work is coordinated with project requirements.
  • Coordinate with external contractors and vendors to ensure that all drafting work is completed to the required standards.
  • Ensure that all drafting work is properly documented and stored in accordance with project requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders to ensure that project deadlines are met.
  • Supports project team in development of design documentation, plans and reports.
  • Collaborates with other disciplines (architectural, mechanical, instrumentation, civil/structural, process piping etc.) to ensure compatibility with the design intent.
  • Participates in hazardous classification and other process safety assessment, evaluation, and design sessions.
  • Assists in development of Construction Work Packages (CWP's).
  • Participates in site visits and field engineering work.
  • Applies appropriate codes, specifications, and standards (both legislated and client-specific).
  • Understands and works within Stantec's project delivery, and quality control guidelines.
  • Complies with Stantec's EH&S program, with a focus on safety in the field. Ensure all work is completed with safety of paramount concern.
  • Assist with client-specific document control and comply to client specific standards.
Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Registration as an CTech or CET is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn and expand horizons.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and prioritize tasks to meet project budget and schedule.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written), including effective communication in a remote 'work-from-home' scenario.
  • Proficient in conversational French (oral and written).
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and take direction as required.
  • Technical proficiency, good understanding of engineering fundamentals and process improvement skills.
  • Initiative, flexibility, and adaptability.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledgeable with Microsoft 365 office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Requires strong understanding of AutoCAD (V2020 or newer) CAD design software and principles.
  • Keep up-to-date with industry trends and advancements in drafting software and technology.
  • Requires understanding of MicroStation design software and principles.
  • Experience with Adobe and/or Bluebeam is a requirement.
  • Requires understanding of SharePoint.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and applicable Canadian Electrical Code, CSA codes and standards is considered an asset.

Education and Experience

  • The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of experience consulting field.
  • College Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from a recognized school required.
  • Knowledge of relevant codes and design standards preferred.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
