Job summary

McElhanney is seeking an Intermediate Bridge Engineer to join our Edmonton bridge team, with a clear pathway to leadership and potential employee ownership. You will drive bridge project delivery, spanning design, inspection, and rehabilitation work across Alberta, collaborating closely with a seasoned team in BC. The role requires a Civil/Structural Engineering degree, P.Eng.

in Alberta, and 6–12 years’ experience. Knowledge of CSA S6 and TEC standards will be assets.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering and/or Structural Engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution with 6–12 years of experience.
  • P.Eng. in Alberta in good standing and eligible for BC registration.
  • Knowledge of CSA S6 applied to bridge projects across highway, rural road, and resources.
  • Familiarity with TEC standards (preferred).
  • Strong background in bridge design, rehabilitation, assessment, inspection, or contract administration.

Responsibilities

  • Complete inspections, analyses, modeling and design of bridges and related structures.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary project teams across Alberta and BC.
  • Prepare and review structural calculations for various bridge types.
  • Engage in business development, project pursuits, and proposals for bridge projects.
  • Prepare and review specifications, drawings, and contract documents.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technologists; coordinate with sub-consultants.

The Opportunity

McElhanney is currently seeking an Intermediate Bridge Engineer to join our Bridge team in Edmonton. This is a pivotal opportunity for an experienced engineer to take on a leadership role in shaping the growth of our bridge practice in Alberta, with a clear pathway to career advancement and potential employee ownership. In this role, you will be instrumental in expanding McElhanney’s bridge engineering presence across the province, while collaborating closely with our established team of bridge specialists in British Columbia. Our diverse portfolio features major interchanges, river crossings, and complex bridge rehabilitation projects, many of which have earned industry recognition in both Alberta and BC. Notable projects include the Stoney Trail Bridge Twinning involving bridge construction engineering support for a segmentally launched, balanced, cantilevered 470 m-long bridge over the Bow River.

This role is designated as a safety sensitive position.

What You’ll Do
  • Complete inspections, assessments, analyses, structural modeling and design of bridges and other transportation infrastructure such as retaining walls and major sign structures.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary project teams across Alberta and BC.
  • Apply knowledge of Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC), City of Edmonton, and/or City of Calgary standards.
  • Prepare and review structural design calculations for highway bridges, pedestrian bridges, railroad bridges, resource bridges, retaining walls, and bridge-sized culverts.
  • Participate in business development, project pursuits, and proposal preparation on bridge and other transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Prepare conceptual, design, and contract cost estimates.
  • Coordinate with sub-consultants and other various interested parties.
  • Prepare and/or review specifications, special provisions, drawings, contract documents, and other related project deliverables.
  • Undertake construction contract administration, field inspection, and reporting to monitor the quality and progress of the work being performed.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure schedules, budgets, and quality control standards are achieved and maintained.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technologists while learning from senior bridge and structural specialists.
What You’ll Bring
  • Degree in Civil Engineering and/or Structural Engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution plus 6 to 12 years of experience in a similar role.
  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering is considered an asset.
  • Registration in good standing as a P.Eng. in Alberta and eligible for registration in British Columbia.
  • Knowledge and experience with bridge design related to CSA S6 and its application to bridge projects across highway, rural road, and resource projects.
  • Familiarity with TEC standards (preferred).
  • Strong technical background in bridge design, rehabilitation, assessment, inspection, and/or contract administration.
  • Proficiency in the application of MIDAS, SAP2000, CSiBridge, or comparable structural analysis software related to bridge design work.
  • Experience in bridge hydrotechnical analysis in accordance with TEC guidelines is considered an asset.
  • A collaborative, entrepreneurial mindset with an interest in helping build a team.
What Can We Offer You?

The salary range for this position is $95,000 to $135,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
