Job summary

WSP in Canada is seeking an Intermediate Biologist to deliver moderately complex assignments across Ontario, supporting environmental approvals, impact assessments, monitoring programs, and natural heritage work.

You will shape defensible technical conclusions, design ecological studies, and translate field observations into practical recommendations, working with wildlife, wetlands, vegetation and fish habitat projects.

Qualifications

• Degree in ecology, biology, environmental science, or related field.
• 2–5 years of ecological consulting, environmental assessment, or related field experience.
• Strong technical writing and scientific reasoning.
• Experience preparing ecological reports, impact studies, or environmental assessments.
• Working knowledge of Ontario ecology and related legislation.

In this Intermediate Biologist role, you will independently deliver moderately complex assignments, shape defensible technical conclusions, and support environmental approvals, impact assessments, monitoring programs, and natural heritage work across government, infrastructure, mining, energy, and municipal sectors.

Your Impact

• Prepare clear, well-structured technical reports, memos, environmental assessment documents, environmental impact studies, natural heritage assessments, monitoring reports, and supporting correspondence.
• Translate field observations, background information, agency requirements, policy direction, and analytical results into defensible conclusions and practical recommendations.
• Design ecological studies by defining objectives, identifying data needs, selecting appropriate survey methods, confirming seasonal timing, and documenting scientific rationale.
• Interpret ecological data to assess existing conditions, sensitivities, potential effects, mitigation measures, residual effects, and monitoring requirements.
• Lead or coordinate ecological surveys within your area of specialization, including wildlife, terrestrial, wetland, vegetation, aquatic, or species at risk work.
• Strengthen quality by reviewing field data, mapping inputs, background research, analysis tables, and technical deliverables before internal or client review.
• Apply relevant Ontario policy, guidance, and legislation to project work, including natural heritage, species conservation, fisheries, migratory birds, and official plan requirements.

• Contribute to proposals and collaborative meetings by developing scopes, assumptions, methods, effort estimates, schedules, and technical approaches for ecological work programs .
• A degree in ecology, biology, environmental science, environmental studies, natural resource management, or a related discipline; a research-based graduate degree is a strong asset.
• Typically, 2 to 5 years of relevant ecological consulting, environmental assessment, government, conservation authority, academic, research, or applied field biology experience; equivalent combinations of graduate education and related work experience will be considered.
• Strong technical writing and scientific reasoning, including the ability to evaluate evidence, identify uncertainty, document assumptions and limitations, and explain why conclusions are defensible.
• Experience preparing or contributing substantively to ecological reports, impact studies, natural heritage assessments, environmental assessment documents, monitoring reports, or permitting support materials.
• Working knowledge of Ontario ecology, natural heritage systems, environmental policy, and applicable legislation, supported by experience with field data, desktop sources, GIS or mapping products, and agency databases.
• Expertise in one or more areas such as natural heritage planning and peer review, species at risk, breeding birds, boreal caribou, amphibians, wetlands, vegetation communities, aquatic or fish habitat, ELC, OWES, BHA, arborist work, or ecological monitoring.
• Sound judgement to work independently on moderately complex assignments, adjust field programs when needed, and seek senior input for novel, high-risk, precedent-setting, or policy-sensitive issues.
• A valid Ontario driver’s licence, ability to travel for field work and site visits where required, and a commitment to health, safety, quality, respectful engagement, professional integrity, and reliable delivery.

AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $80,800 - $107,000

MB & ON: $73,700 - $101,500

NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $73,000 - $96,900
