Stantec is expanding its Yukon-based archaeological team by adding a full-time intermediate archaeologist in Whitehorse. The role is largely field-based during the field season and will work on projects across Yukon, with potential to extend into BC.

The successful candidate will hold Yukon ASR permits eligibility or progress toward permits within one field season, and will contribute to HRIA/HROA studies, reporting, and collaboration with Indigenous communities and regulatory agencies.

We are looking to expand our Yukon‑based archaeological team with a full‑time intermediate archaeologist based out of the Whitehorse office. The role will be largely field‑based during the field season and will focus on projects throughout Yukon but may extend into BC as well.

We are looking for an individual who can hold Yukon Class 2 Archaeology Sites Regulations (ASR) permits or will meet eligibility requirements to hold Yukon permits within one field season.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct heritage resource impact assessment (HRIA) fieldwork, undertake research for heritage resource overview assessments (HROA), contribute to interim, final reporting, and proposals
• Support project management staff to carry out the technical aspects of HRIA/HROA projects
• Lead or quickly progress towards leading field programs and supervising field staff
• Travel to various remote locations in Yukon from Whitehorse, to carry out field work
• Hold or be eligible to hold (within one year), Yukon Class 2 ASR permits
• Work collaboratively with affected Indigenous communities/members and other staff to make technical recommendations for cultural resources management
• Digitally collect fieldwork data through ESRI FieldMaps, submit Survey 123 forms and manage field data
• Support the Geographic Information System (GIS) team in the preparation of figures for regulatory deliverables
• Provide technical direction and mentor field staff
• Actively participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) protection programs

Capabilities and Credentials

• Dedicated to following and promoting a strong safety culture and adhering to HSSE practices
• Experience in mapping, pedestrian surveys (up to 10 km/day), subsurface testing, excavation, data collection, and capable of carrying up to 23 kg
• Experience identifying and recording archaeological and heritage sites, ideally in the Yukon, or in a northern boreal forest or subarctic setting
• Experience in analysis of archaeological artifacts and features, and knowledge of lithic artifact morphology
• Experience identifying traditional use sites and features, CMTs, and historical features
• Availability to travel extensively for project work
• Strong interpersonal and social skills and ability to interact across a broad range of audiences/technical backgrounds including clients, Indigenous groups, and regulatory agencies
• A valid, non-restricted class 5 driver’s license is required and experience driving crew‑cab 4x4 pickups, towing trailers, ATV/UTV and snowmobile is an asset
• Desire to work closely with other environmental professionals and Indigenous community members
• Ability to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity and innovation
• Experience writing technical reports is preferred

Education and Experience

At least one of the following is required:

• Master’s degree focusing on Yukon or boreal/subarctic archaeology topics, and/or
• Archaeology / anthropology bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years’ experience supervising archaeological fieldwork, preferably in Yukon or boreal/subarctic, including inventory, site assessment, and excavation experience, and/or
• Held at least 1 Yukon ASR permit to completion and/or qualified (or in the process of being qualified) as a BC field director in the boreal/subarctic or interior culture areas

Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to walk 4–10 miles daily over rough terrain and capability to lift up to 50 lbs. When conducting non‑local fieldwork, paid travel time and per diem, and single‑occupancy hotel rooms are provided. Stantec fleet or rental cars are often provided. Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
