Job summary

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories is seeking an Instrumentation Technologist at our Chalk River, Ontario location. You will deliver specialized electronic and instrumentation services within Radiation Protection, ensuring accuracy, regulatory compliance, and equipment reliability.

Applicants should have post-secondary technical education or equivalent with 2–3 years of instrumentation experience, plus strong calibration and documentation skills.

Job description

Our Chalk River location is looking for an Instrumentation Technologist to deliver specialized electronic and instrumentation services with the Radiation Protection Department. If you answered yes, then this may be the job for you!

What you will be doing!

• Performing calibration, testing, performance verification, and maintenance of radiation protection instrumentation using specialized facilities, traceable standards, and approved procedures to ensure equipment accuracy, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
• Evaluating instrument performance, identifying out-of-tolerance conditions, investigating anomalies, and implementing corrective actions.
• Preparing, reviewing, and maintaining calibration certificates, technical records, quality control data, and supporting documentation in accordance with quality assurance, regulatory, and program requirements.
• Troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining radiation detection instruments and associated electronic systems.
• Maintaining calibration and test equipment.
• Collaborating with Radiation Protection staff, internal clients, technical specialists, and external vendors to resolve equipment issues, coordinate services, and meet operational requirements.
• Planning and prioritizing assigned work activities to meet service commitments, project schedules, and customer requirements.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What We Are Looking For

• Education
  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education, in a field relevant to the position and two to three years of pertinent technological experience OR Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent, and five to eight years of pertinent and progressive experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
• Experience
  • Two to three years of relevant experience in electronics, instrumentation, calibration services, laboratory operations, or a related technical field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience with radiation detection instrumentation, electronic repair, calibration systems, and quality control processes.
  • Experience preparing and maintaining technical records, calibration certificates, quality assurance documentation, and compliance reports in accordance with established procedures and standards.
  • Experience working with regulated programs, quality control processes, and continuous improvement initiatives is considered an asset.
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of electronic theory, measurement principles, test equipment, and troubleshooting methodologies.
  • Proven ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a wide range of radiation detection instruments and associated electronic systems.
  • Group 2 Radiation Protection training, or the ability to obtain and maintain the qualification, is required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify equipment deficiencies, investigate anomalies, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and other computerized data management systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to delivering high-quality technical services and maintaining positive customer relationships.
• Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security".

Working Conditions

• Working schedule: Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hour work week.
• This position is part of the USW 1568 union and is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in the USW 1568 Collective Agreement. As a member of this bargaining unit, you’ll benefit from clear expectations around hours of work, wages, vacation, and other conditions that support a fair and consistent working environment.
• Auditory requirements relating to the ability to hear and assess audio signals from equipment (e.g. "Geiger counter click").
• Ability to wear respiratory equipment and other PPE&C (e.g. latex or nitrile gloves, safety glasses).
