Job summary

Startec Compression & Process Ltd. seeks an Instrumentation Supervisor to lead installation, calibration, tubing fabrication, testing, and commissioning for compression and process packages at our Calgary shop.

You will oversee instrumentation technicians, ensuring safety, quality, and adherence to engineering standards. The role requires 8+ years in fabrication/production instrumentation, strong PLC/GC knowledge, and proven leadership.

Qualifications

  • Journeyperson Certificate in Instrumentation or related field.
  • 8+ years instrumentation experience in fabrication/production environments.
  • Strong knowledge of tube bending, ORFS assemblies, and 1” SS tubing.
  • Familiar with P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring schematics.
  • Knowledge of Alberta OHS Act, Regulations, and Code.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all instrumentation activities from installation to commissioning.
  • Ensure conformance to drawings, specs, and quality standards.
  • Lead safe work practices including lockout/tagout.
  • Plan and schedule instrumentation work to meet project deadlines.
  • Coordinate with Production, Engineering, QC and trades.
  • Mentor instrumentation technicians and team members.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Startec Compression & Process is currently recruiting an Instrumentation Supervisor to work at our Shepard Shop (9423 Shepard Rd SE, Calgary, AB, T2C 4R6). The Instrumentation Supervisor is responsible for leading all instrumentation installation, calibration, tubing fabrication, testing, and commissioning activities for compression and process packages. This role provides direct oversight of instrumentation technicians, ensuring all work is executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with engineering specifications, codes, and company standards.

The Supervisor plays a critical role in driving production performance, quality outcomes, and team development, while ensuring alignment with project schedules and operational objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Journeyperson Certificate in Instrumentation or a related field
  • Proven leadership experience supervising instrumentation teams
  • 8+ years of instrumentation experience in fabrication/production environments (Process or Compression packages preferred)
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Tube bending and installation (including 1” SS tubing, ORFS assemblies, electric benders)
    • P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring schematics, and G.A’s
    • Instrumentation installation, calibration, and troubleshooting
  • Proven leadership experience supervising instrumentation teams
  • Working knowledge of Alberta OHS Act, Regulations, and Code
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem solving, and decision making abilities
  • Effective communication and team leadership skills
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):
PRODUCTION & TECHNICAL EXECEUTION (Weighting 70%)
Operations Oversight
  • Oversee all instrumentation activities including installation, calibration, tubing fabrication, and support installation
  • Ensure proper execution of:
    • Tube bending and routing
    • Instrument installation and calibration
    • Skid layout per P&IDs, G.A’s, and customer specifications
  • Ensure all work meets engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards
Testing & Commissioning
  • Ensure proper function and calibration of instruments such as flow meters, pressure gauges, transmitters, etc.
  • Support troubleshooting of instrumentation and electrical systems
Quality & Compliance
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and regulatory requirements
  • Enforce compliance with applicable instrumentation codes and standards
  • Minimize rework through strong quality control practices
OPERATIONS & PROCESS MANAGEMENT (Weighting 20%)
Production Coordination
  • Plan, schedule, and assign instrumentation work to meet project deadlines
  • Coordinate closely with Production, Engineering, QC, and other trades to optimize workflow
  • Monitor productivity and address bottlenecks or inefficiencies
Documentation & Reporting
  • Ensure all documentation is completed per company standards (testing records, calibration reports, turnover packages)
  • Provide regular updates in production meetings and maintain shift handover reporting
Safety Execution
  • Lead toolbox talks, risk assessments, and hazard mitigation activities
  • Conduct safety walks, inspections, and ensure compliance with company safety programs
LEADERSHIP & TEAM DEVELOPMENT (Weighting 10%)
Team Leadership & Mentorship
  • Supervisor, mentor, and develop instrumentation technicians and appreciates
  • Support hands on training in :
    • Installation techniques
    • Calibration and testing procedures
    • Tubing fabrication and layout
  • Promote a high performance, accountable team environment
Cross Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with Engineering, Design, QC, Safety, and Operations teams
  • Maintain strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, vendors, and inspectors
Continuous Improvement
  • Drive continuous improvement in installation efficiency, quality, and workflow
  • Support process optimization and best practice implementation across instrumentation scope
