Job summary

Shell Scotford is seeking an Instrumentation/Analyzer Technician to support safe, reliable operations in the Scotford Maintenance Department (MCTA). The role collaborates with MTL and CTM teams to perform maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of process analyzers and related devices.

The successful candidate will work across refinery and chemical assets, with opportunities to lead contractor work, participate in reliability programs, and support turnarounds in a unionized environment.

Qualifications

  • Legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis.
  • Minimum of 5 years as a ticketed Journeyperson Instrument/Analyzer Technician/Mechanic.
  • Strong instrumentation and analyzer maintenance knowledge is an asset.
  • Experience with field instruments, analyzers, and related control devices.
  • Digital skills with Office 365, Power Platform, and mobile devices.

Responsibilities

  • Verifying and executing work on approved work orders.
  • Maintaining safety for self and co-workers per life-saving rules.
  • Troubleshooting, testing, calibrating, and repairing analytical equipment.
  • Collaborating with operations, engineering and reliability programs.
  • Supporting shutdowns, outages, and turnarounds as needed.
  • Leading / directing contractors and CTMs when required.

What's the role?

Shell is seeking an Instrumentation/Analyzer Technician (internally known as Craft Team Member) who will report to the Instrumentation/Analyzer Maintenance Leader (MTL) in either the Refinery or Chemicals division of the Scotford Maintenance Department (MCTA).

The Instrumentation/Analyzer Technicians is accountable to perform maintenance and troubleshooting activities within their skill set in support of safe, reliable operations.Work is guided by their MTL and the CTM works with other team members to deliver a combined maintenance schedule. Working closely with other craft disciplines as they execute repairs and perform preventative maintenance to deliver high reliability and efficient equipment care.

It should be noted that Shell Scotford consists of two (2) Upgraders as well as a Refinery and Chemicals plant. Refinery and Chemicals are represented by Unifor Local Union 530A and as such, successful candidates hired to join the Refinery and Chemicals Asset will be members of the Union upon hire. New employees will be provided with more details of the Collective Bargaining Agreement by a Union Representative during regular onboarding sessions. The Upgraders are not represented by a Union body.

Accountabilities
  • Verifying and executing work as defined on approved work orders

  • Actively engaged in ensuring the safety of self and co-workers, providing, and accepting interventions to achieve Goal Zero and adheres to Shell Scotford policies and Shell’s Life Saving rules

  • Troubleshooting, testing, calibrating, and repairing electronic and pneumatic process field devices and equipment (ie., Various type analyzers, control valves, control loops primary field devices)

  • As a team player, the successful candidates will work with technical support, operations, and engineering groups in reliability programs, root cause analysis, risk analysis, and failure mode cause and effect analysis as required

  • Providing input into shutdown work scope and overhaul issues

  • Aiding in integrity audits of equipment installations (for new projects)

  • Assisting in the development/updating of preventative maintenance systems, spare part programs, maintenance practices and infrastructure issues

  • The successful candidates may be required to perform lead roles and direct work of contractors and other Shell Craft Team Members as required

  • Support the business\assets with various coverages \ Projects and turn arounds

  • May be required to work outside of primary hired location to support the different assets on site

What you bring
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Minimum of 5 years as a ticketed Journeyperson Instrument/Analyzer Technician/Mechanic

  • Strong process Instrumentation and Analyzer Maintenance and Knowledge would be an asset

  • Troubleshooting and maintaining experience with: CEMS (Sick and Ametek 900-910), GC’s (ABB and Siemens), Mass spectrometer, PH/Conductivity, HACH Silica/Chlorine, TOC and O2/Combustibles is considered an asset

  • Experience with Fieldvue, Smart Devices and Bentley Vibration Monitoring would be an asset

  • Strong safety consciousness and situational awareness in all that the Craft Team Member does

  • Embraces technology including a strong digital skillset - Skill level understanding of Office 365 including OneNote and MS Teams, Power Platform (Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate), P6 Team member and use of IPads are assets

  • Excellent safety record and a safety mindset

  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • High level of ownership for the quality and condition of the devices used to maintain safe unit operation

  • Experience in an industrial environment is an asset

  • Experience in custody transfer and meter proving would be an asset

  • Facilitation and conflict resolution skills are an asset

  • Cooperative, constructive approach to situations that speaks to the Craft Team Member’s respect and consideration of others

  • Possesses interpersonal skills to deal with a wide range of people, in a wide range of situations, often in the context of a team environment

  • Ability to learn from other and share learning's

  • Ability to be able to read piping and instrument diagrams and Loop drawings

  • Willingness to share knowledge with co-workers and train apprentices

  • Commitment to continuous learning

  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively with Operations / Management / Equipment Specialists & Engineering

  • Competent in standard computer operations and Microsoft Office

  • Must possess a valid driver's license

  • Some travel, overtime and after-hours coverage required

  • Willing to work nights, weekends, holidays and be on-call to respond to emergencies when required

  • Willing to work outdoors in inclement weather

  • Able to climb ladders and stairs, work at heights and in confined spaces.

  • Using safe lifting techniques, able to lift and carry 20 kg from ground to waist level

  • Ability to work safely wearing a respirator or Self-contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

  • Willing to comply with Shell's drug-free and harassment-free work environment and comply with all safety policies and procedures.
