Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Toronto is seeking a Lifesaving Instructor and Examiner in Toronto to teach and assess Lifesaving Society course content. You will create engaging lesson plans, employ diverse learning styles, and ensure safety and certifications are up to date.

Responsibilities include delivering course content, examining participants, coordinating schedules, and collaborating with staff to promote YMCA programs.

Qualifications

• Current Lifesaving Society NL, Standard First Aid and CPR‑C, plus Lifesaving Instructor/Examiner credentials.
• Experience in instructing Lifesaving courses is an asset.
• Strong communication and organizational skills with attention to detail.

The Lifesaving Instructor and Examiner, teaches and examines specific course content, using Lifesaving Society and YMCA equipment, resources and materials. Instructors develop course lesson plans that incorporate different learning styles.

In this role, you will:

• Teach in the aquatic area, ensure all safety and life guarding procedures are followed, and respond in emergencies as trained by the Association and the Lifesaving Society.
• Deliver course content and examine participants following Lifesaving Society criteria.
• Plan, organize, and implement course lesson plans.
• Recognize participant learning styles and deliver content accordingly.
• Coach and develop participants for success.
• Ensure qualifications and certifications are current as required by the YMCA and regulatory standards.
• Participate actively in scheduled programs, meetings, and special events.
• Collaborate with program members, volunteers, and YMCA staff, assist and encourage program members to access additional appropriate programs offered at this location.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

You Bring:

• Current Certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards: National Lifeguard (NL), Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification OR Intermediate First Aid and CPR level C certification issued by a WSIB approved provider prior to the first day of work , Lifesaving Instructor and Examiner
• Previous experience Instructing Lifesaving Courses an asset
• Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with participants
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Well-developed organizational skills and attention to detail
• Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work, including early mornings, days, evenings and weekends
• Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging
• Focus on the health, safety and wellbeing of all children, youth, and vulnerable people in YMCA programs including understanding legal and moral obligations related to reporting suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services
