The Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre (SAFPC) is a designated mental health facility that provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary court-ordered assessments, treatment and rehabilitation to individuals who have been found Not Criminally Responsible due to Mental Disorder (NCR-MD) under the legislation of the Criminal Code Review Board and temporary treatment and stabilization for individuals who have decompensated while in custody. Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Instructor - Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) will be responsible to educate and coach team members to promote the development and sustainability of clinical best practices, achieve comprehensive care planning, and assist in implementation of evidence-based practice. The CNE will foster inter-professional teamwork, patient-centered care and innovation. The CNE will possess advanced skill knowledge and experience in Addiction and Mental Health nursing, with an ability to educate and mentor staff. The CNE will be expected to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team and be involved in quality improvement and program development, planning implementation and evaluation to ensure the delivery of quality care to patients and families.

Description

As an Instructor, you will be an expert practitioner and key educator in support of both nursing staff and the multi-disciplinary clinical team. You will take a leadership role in the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of education for nursing staff including orientation, compulsory and continuing education, and clinical development. You will collaborate with management and internal partners to promote standards of clinical, educational and evidence informed practice. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification.

Additional Required Qualifications

A minimum of 3 years of recent (within the last 5 years) experience working within inpatient Mental Health with an FTE. Strong knowledge and skills with Connect Care, ability to assess learning needs of staff to support practice and ongoing development on a multidisciplinary team required. Knowledge and ability to act as a leader/support, understand when/how to step in and act as a resource and provide nursing coverage on the floor as required. Expert knowledge of mental health (diagnosis, recovery-oriented care, complex care planning), documentation, record management, HPA restricted activities, Mental Health Act, suicide risk assessment, knowledge of NCR-MD designations and Criminal Code Review Board procedures, current applicable policy and legislation required. Strong working knowledge/experience of aggression/de‑escalation techniques. Must have familiarity of expectations of medical capabilities within mental health and ability to support staff in medical management of patients and emergency response when needed is required.

Preferred Qualifications

A minimum of 1 years’ experience and knowledge of inpatient or outpatient forensic psychiatry is preferred. Experience in Quality Improvement Initiatives. Minimum of 1 years’ experience working as a CNE. Knowledge/experience with E-Sims and CPS an asset. Demonstrated leadership or clinical supervision of health care professionals. Experience in a leadership role in the advancement of nursing practice.
