Overview

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Reporting to the Director, People & Culture, the Instructional Designer plays a key role in shaping high-impact learning across the organization. This role is responsible for assessing learning needs and designing, developing, and implementing engaging learning content, materials, and program plans that support organizational goals. Working collaboratively across the organization, the Instructional Designer ensures compliance requirements are met while advancing corporate training programs that drive continuous improvement and strengthen organizational performance.

This is a fixed term one year opportunity, with the possibility of a six-month extension, offers competitive compensation, paid vacation, and health & dental benefits as part of your overall compensation package. We support a hybrid work environment, where the team is in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays are flexible for where you work best.

Responsibilities
  • Design and maintain corporate training programs using best practices in adult learning to support organizational goals and align with strategic priorities and objectives.
  • Partner with subject matter experts to define learning objectives and source, design, and deliver learning through webinars, e-learning, in-person, hybrid, and other delivery methods.
  • Work with policy owners to creatively meet policy driven training needs and ensure all learning meets compliance requirements.
  • Stay current on industry best practices and recommend and implement engaging, effective learning solutions.
  • Evaluate learning programs, provide data-informed recommendations, and apply lessons learned to future initiatives.
  • Support procurement activities and manage relationships with external consultants and vendors.
  • Collaborate with the Learning & Development team to refine processes, improve efficiencies, and enhance the employee learning experience.
  • Partner with People & Culture Business Partners to identify learning needs and develop targeted programs for individuals and the organization.
  • Maintain expertise in the LMS (Workday) and identify opportunities to improve system use, functionality, and efficiency.
Qualifications
  • Post secondary degree or diploma required.
  • Certificate in Workplace or Adult Learning, or equivalent.
  • Five or more years of experience in corporate learning and development, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Strong knowledge of adult learning principles, instructional design, and engaging learning methodologies, supported by excellent written and verbal communication skills—including facilitation and audience engagement.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively, build strong relationships, and maintain trust across the organization.
  • Skilled in critical thinking, creative problem solving, and managing multiple priorities under pressure with strong attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and experienced with Articulate 360; familiarity with video editing and graphic design tools such as Adobe Creative Cloud or similar software.
  • Comfortable learning and adapting to emerging digital tools and technologies.
