Job summary

Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) is seeking an experienced Infrastructure Engineer to design, implement, and support secure, scalable IT infrastructure across on-premises, hybrid-cloud, and cloud environments. You will collaborate with Network, Cyber Security, and Software Engineering teams to support enterprise apps, research, and AI workloads.

Responsibilities include managing servers, storage, virtualization, and cloud services, with a focus on reliability, security, and documentation.

Qualifications

• Experience administering Microsoft infrastructure including Windows Server and Azure resources.
• VMware vSphere/ESXi/vCenter administration experience.
• Strong networking knowledge (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, firewalls, VPN).
• Experience with backup, DR, patching, lifecycle management.
• Scripting/automation with PowerShell, Bash or Python.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain server, storage, virtualization, and cloud infrastructure.
• Administer Windows Server, Linux and Azure services with IAM components.
• Manage VMware vSphere, ESXi, and vCenter environments.
• Support DNS, DHCP, backup, DR, and monitoring services.
• Handle patching, upgrades, lifecycle replacement, and capacity planning.
• Troubleshoot infrastructure incidents and service requests.
• Maintain secure configurations in line with cyber-security requirements.
• Support hybrid-cloud connectivity and cloud migrations.
• Create and maintain architecture diagrams, runbooks, and runbooks.
• Identify opportunities for automation and resilience improvements.

Your Role:

EIT are seeking an experienced Infrastructure Engineer to design, implement and support secure, reliable and scalable IT infrastructure across on-premises, hybrid-cloud and cloud environments. Working closely with Network Infrastructure, Cyber Security and Software Engineering teams, you will maintain core server, storage, virtualisation, backup and cloud services supporting enterprise applications, scientific research and AI workloads.

Your Responsibilities:

• Design, implement and maintain server, storage, virtualisation and cloud infrastructure.
• Administer Windows Server, Linux and Microsoft Azure services, including identity and access-management components.
• Manage VMware vSphere, ESXi and vCenter environments.
• Support core infrastructure services including DNS, DHCP, backup, disaster recovery and monitoring.
• Manage server patching, upgrades, lifecycle replacement and capacity planning.
• Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure incidents, problems and service requests.
• Maintain secure infrastructure configurations in line with cyber-security and audit requirements.
• Support hybrid-cloud connectivity and integration with OCI, Azure and other cloud services where required.
• Maintain technical documentation, architecture diagrams, runbooks and operational procedures.
• Identify and deliver infrastructure automation, resilience and service-improvement opportunities.

Essential Skills, Qualifications & Experience:

• Experience administering Microsoft infrastructure, including Windows Server and Azure resources.
• Deploying and managing virtualised environments using VMware vSphere, ESXi, and vCenter.
• Knowledge of server and storage hardware technologies.
• Strong understanding of core networking services, including DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, firewalls and VPN connectivity.
• Proven experience supporting enterprise IT infrastructure, including servers, storage, networking and cloud services.
• Experience with backup, disaster recovery, patching and infrastructure lifecycle management.
• Experience with enterprise storage, SAN/NAS and backup solutions.
• Experience using scripting and automation tools, such as PowerShell, Bash or Python.
• Knowledge of infrastructure monitoring, alerting and incident resolution.
• Strong troubleshooting, documentation and communication skills.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

• Experience with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), AWS or other public-cloud platforms.
• Experience using Terraform or other Infrastructure as Code tools.
• Knowledge of Git and CI/CD pipelines.
• Knowledge of cyber security controls, vulnerability remediation and privileged access management.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes or container platforms.
• Experience supporting hybrid-cloud environments and cloud migration projects.
• Relevant technical certifications, such as Microsoft, VMware, Cisco or Oracle Cloud.

Working Together – What It Involves:

• You must have the right to work permanently in the UK with a willingness to travel as necessary.
• You will live in, or within easy commuting distance of, Oxford (or be willing to relocate).
• During peak periods, some longer hours may be required and some working across multiple time zones due to the global nature of the programme.
