Role Overview

The Municipality of North Cowichan (population 31,900) is located in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Southern Vancouver Island, between Nanaimo and Victoria. Our communities of Chemainus, Crofton, Maple Bay, and the South End are home to a multitude of artistic, cultural and outdoor recreational activities. Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, RCMP Support Services, this position will be responsible for a variety of clerical functions including public interaction at the front counter, answering calls, civil fingerprinting, police information checks, local police checks for record suspensions (pardons), serve subpoenas and other documents, receive and record found property, document and direct enquiries and complaints from the public, provide information and interpret Federal, Provincial and Municipal laws, create operational files utilizing PRIME, receive and process incoming/outgoing mail and courier packages. Maintain daily cash and balance cash totals at the end of day. Provide training as required relating to front desk procedures. This position involves high volume workloads where independence, collaboration, effective communication and judgment skills are a must. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time. This position may be exposed to graphic and explicit subject matter.

Required Skills, Qualifications, and Abilities
  1. Completion of Grade 12.
  2. Successful completion of formal relevant training (e.g. Applied Business Technology program at Vancouver Island University) and two years' experience in an office environment; or acceptable combination of education, training and experience.
  3. Recent clerical experience or other support in a law-enforcement, judicial or legal environment is an asset.
  4. Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  5. Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook. Experience using PRIME and/or CPIC is an asset.
  6. Strong knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation, composition, and commonly used RCMP terminology, and of office practices and procedures.
  7. A minimum accurate keyboard speed of 60 wpm is required. Proof of typing speed or assessment results from the last 24 months must be included with your application. If you require information on where to obtain a typing/keyboarding speed test, please contact yourhr@northcowichan.ca.
  8. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License; a satisfactory current driver's abstract will be required.
  9. Sound working knowledge of the Criminal Code, Federal and Provincial statutes, Municipal Bylaws and the rules of collecting evidence.
  10. Knowledge of Access to Information and Privacy Act regulations relating to the disclosure of Protected Information.
  11. Working knowledge of RCMP records management systems, police reporting and standard police procedures.
  12. Working knowledge of the structure of the RCMP and its relationship with other Federal and Provincial departments and Municipal administrations.
  13. Must be able to obtain and maintain Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Special Provincial Constable designation.
  14. Independence of judgment and capability of working under minimal supervision.
  15. Ability to tactfully deal with concerns, questions or issues both verbally and in writing.
  16. The position may be physically demanding; candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.
