Job summary

A local educational institution in Fort McMurray is seeking an Indigenous Liaison to provide academic and emotional support to Indigenous students. The ideal candidate will have experience with family support and a background in Indigenous studies. Responsibilities include mentoring, cultural event organization, and working with the community. A valid driver's license is required.

Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience with Indigenous Family Support or similar.
  • Access to vehicle and valid class 5 driver’s license.
  • Experience working with students with learning difficulties is an asset.

Key Function(s)

The employee provides social, emotional and academic support and guidance to Indigenous students. Additionally, is a cultural interpreter, role model and mentor of students and staff in understanding Indigenous culture.

Job Qualifications
  • At least one (1) year of experience working with Indigenous Family Support, Community Support Worker or similar type position.
  • Certificate/diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution related to Indigenous studies, or Child and Youth, or Social Work diploma or other equivalent combinations of directly related post-secondary education and directly related experience will be considered.
  • Access to vehicle and valid class 5 driver’s license
Requirements
  • Knowledge and ability to work effectively with Indigenous students and families
  • Ability to work cooperatively with parents, school and community agencies
  • Excellent organizational, report writing, and time management skills are essential
  • Must be comfortable with home visits
  • Ability to organize cultural events and to bring speakers and resources to support our Indigenous educational programs
  • Extensive knowledge of Indigenous culture is essential
  • Knowledge of Cree and Dene languages is beneficial
  • Experience working with students with learning difficulties and training in literacy-numeracy are assets

The successful candidate will be required to provide a Criminal Reference Check and a Vulnerable Sector Check. FMCSD will contact past and present employers for references. All FMCSD employees are expected to be computer literate; this includes fluency with e-mail, Internet and MS Office.
