Job summary

Ontario Native Women's Association (ONWA) is seeking an Indigenous Healthy Babies Healthy Children Worker to support Indigenous families with children from prenatal to age 6. This role focuses on ensuring access to effective, consistent early interventions through home visiting, service coordination, parenting groups, cultural teaching, traditions, and referrals.

You will collaborate with local agencies, track progress, and advocate for community members while upholding occupational standards

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma or bachelor’s degree in social sciences or health services.
  • Minimum three years' experience in a community setting.
  • Advocacy work on behalf of Community Members, including referrals to local service agencies.
  • Ability to network with other community agencies, services, and organizations.
  • Experience tracking and reporting statistical information.
  • Crisis support, guidance and referral skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management and presentation skills with the ability to follow through on assigned duties independently within strict deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communications, with emphasis on keen listening and ability to interpret needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide home visiting and service coordination to Indigenous families with children prenatal to age 6.
  • Facilitate parenting groups and cultural teaching, incorporating traditions and referrals.
  • Connect families with local service agencies and resources to ensure access to early intervention services.
  • Support accurate documentation, data collection, and reporting of program activities.

SCOPE:

The Indigenous Healthy Babies Healthy Children Worker is responsible to ensure that all Indigenous families and their children (prenatal to age 6) who need assistance with physical, emotional, mental and social issues have access to effective, consistent, early intervention services.

The Indigenous Healthy Babies Healthy Children Worker provides the best opportunities for healthy child development through home visiting, service coordination, parenting groups, cultural teaching, traditions, and referrals.

QUALIFICATIONS:
SKILLS:
  • Post-secondary diploma or bachelor's degree in social sciences or health services, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years' experience in a community setting.
  • Advocacy work on behalf of Community Members, including referral to local service agencies.
  • Ability to network with other community agencies, services, and organizations.
  • Experience tracking and reporting statistical information.
  • Crisis support, guidance and referral skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management and presentation skills with the ability to follow through on assigned duties independently within strict deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communications, with emphasis on keen listening and ability to effectively interpret verbal communications and needs of prospective Community Members.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office and competency working with other databases.
KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, history, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of and connection to service agencies in the location of service delivery.
  • Knowledge of parenting skills, prenatal health and issues, infant care, and nutrition issues.
  • Knowledge and working understanding of Not-for-Profit Organizations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current issues facing Indigenous women and their families.
  • Ability to speak an Indigenous language is considered an asset.
  • A Doula certification is considered an asset.
