Job Overview

Volunteers 18 and over are required to tutor children in care who are in need of extra help in achieving their full academic potential. The volunteer will assist a child to experience success in learning through a supportive one-to-one relationship.

What you’ll be doing

Volunteers are required to tutor children in care who are in need of extra help in achieving their full academic potential. The volunteer will assist a child to experience success in learning through a supportive one-to-one relationship. The children requiring assistance can range from age 6-18 and all academic levels. Scheduling can be arranged directly with the foster parents and the tutor at your mutual convenience.

Role
  • To assist a child to experience success in learning through a supportive one-to-one relationship.
  • To provide the child with basic learning tools and skills.
Time commitment
  • One or two hours weekly. Times are flexible and will be arranged to accommodate all participants.
Major Responsibilities
  • Act as a sensitive, caring learning guide, enabling the child to discover his/her own strengths as a student.
  • Model healthy study skills and positive approaches to school work.
  • Tutoring can be held at the agency, library or foster home, as mutually agreeable.
  • Advise the worker and Coordinator of Volunteers of any concerns or problems that may arise during tutoring sessions.
  • Adhere to the guidelines of the agency’s Code of Conduct.
Requirements
  • General knowledge of material to be learned.
  • An interest in and ability to relate well to children and families.
  • A Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Be fully vaccinated and provide receipt.
  • Patience, flexibility and non-judgemental attitude.
  • Experience in teaching an asset.
