Job summary

Vancouver Island University (VIU) invites applications for multiple instructor positions in the FACP faculty. Instructors will deliver face-to-face courses listed (FNST 047; STSK 038/068; Multi-level English/Math) and prepare all curriculum/materials for VIU's D2L system, supporting students with a holistic, collaborative approach.

Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline with teaching experience; exceptional cases include a Bachelor’s with 24 credits.

Job description

FACP faculty members prepare students for success in a wide range of post-secondary programs, workplaces, and communities. They support and empower students towards growth and change. They contribute to the culture of the Faculty through energetic teaching, scholarship and institutional service. Faculty members must be committed to inclusivity and diversity, and they play a critical role in building the capacity of the Faculty.

Duties:

Instruct course(s) listed below; prepare all curriculum and course materials and ensure materials are available for students on VIU's D2L system; provide individual and group instruction using a learning centre style delivery that is holistic, collaborative, flexible, and student-centred; offer academic student support; facilitate student evaluation, perform grading and record keeping; liaise with ABE Chair, Student Success Advisors and community program coordinator as and when appropriate; participate as an active member of the instructional faculty. Instructor(s) will work closely as part of the team to ensure program integrity. Course delivery is face-to-face. Successful candidate(s) must be able to attend in-person in-community and on-campus as required.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success. Successful candidates will participate in activities outside the classroom including student support and department committees.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in a relevant discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and relevant teaching experience. In exceptional circumstances, where an individual holds a Bachelor's degree with 24 credits in a relevant discipline and can demonstrate excellence in teaching through related experience, the requirement for a Master's may be deferred.
Recent experience teaching stated subjects and levels. Experience teaching a variety of student success skills to adult learners, including active listening, critical thinking, personal management skills, study skills, test-taking skills, and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver courses/lessons that incorporate a wide range of teaching strategies and address the needs of adult learners with various learning styles and abilities. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Familiarity with, and ability to, access institutional and community resources. Familiarity with VIU's courses and programs is an asset.
Teaching Expertise: Applicants should be prepared to provide a short sample lesson or teaching demonstration on a topic that will be provided before the interview.
The interview will contain at least one content question that the applicant has not been able to prepare for ahead of time. The responses will be used by the interview panel to gauge the applicant's subject knowledge, classroom management and teaching expertise.
Successful candidate will have a deep understanding of Indigenous history and issues, particularly as they relate to post-secondary education and an appreciation of the complexity and range of Indigenous peoples and communities. Demonstrated understanding and experience in working with Indigenous communities and ability to integrate Indigenous perspectives.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous experience in a post-secondary setting and an understanding and awareness of Indigenous people on Vancouver Island and local protocols.
• Previous experience delivering instruction in-community.
