Idea Lab (STEM) Technician
Full-Time Contract
Commencing January 2026 until end of June 2026 (6 months)
Annual Salary: $50,000 - $58,000

The Idea Lab Technician plays a key role in integrating current and emerging technologies into the Grades 7–12 curriculum, aligning with the Ontario Curriculum, the Signature of a BSS Girl attributes, and our Culture of Powerful Learning. The Idea Lab Technician will empower students to explore, design, and build in our state of the art Idea Lab and Maker Space. This role supports both students and educators by building capacity in the use of tools, technology, and the design thinking process, while also supporting classroom and lab integration. The Idea Lab Technician facilitates skill development, promotes the safe and effective use of tools, and contributes to the creation of new STEM learning experiences and instructional techniques.

What You’ll Do:
  • Supports innovative teaching and learning using design technologies including 3D printing, laser cutting, soldering, electronic design, woodworking, digital printing, sewing, CNC milling and other technical work.
  • Deepens teacher understanding and use of the Idea Lab for learning by delivering planned or just-in-time skills development.
  • Builds relationships with Grade 7 to 12 learners so that responsive and personalized learning experiences can be crafted for them.
  • Collaborates and consults with teachers and students to develop and support projects.
  • Supports teachers from all areas of the school as their students design and create products using available tools and technology.
  • As part of a team, participate and take initiative to research and test current and/or emergent tools as well as developing best use practices relevant to the BSS learning environment and strategic direction.
  • Reviews, updates, and establishes new safety procedures that ensure faculty and students are working safely as they use the tools and the spaces.
  • Maintains and services technology and tools within the Idea Lab, keeping a safe, clean, and functional workspace, troubleshooting problems, and assisting in the installation of new technology.
  • Manages and monitors equipment and materials inventory, proactively placing orders, receiving and restocking as necessary, and providing required paperwork to the Accounts Payable Administrator.
  • Maintains inventories of materials, projects, and other resources for design technology.
  • Active member of the Health and Safety Committee.
Who You Are:
  • Education in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Skilled in diverse areas of technology, including 2D design and 3D CAD software, 3D printing, laser cutting, machining, electronics, basic programming, the use of hand tools, sewing and textiles.
  • Understanding of Design Thinking and the Design Process.
  • Proven experience working safely in a lab environment, maintaining a safe and functional workspace and training others to use tools and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Experience using and maintaining traditional and rapid-prototyping tools.
