Job summary

AtkinsRéalis is seeking an experienced Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) engineer to design and develop I&C systems for CANDU and other nuclear projects in Canada. The role covers conceptual to detailed design, specifications, wiring, and cross-disciplinary interface.

The ideal candidate is a licensed Ontario P.Eng with at least seven years in I&C design for nuclear facilities, plus strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, in a hybrid Canadian environment.

Qualifications

• Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario, member in good standing.
• Minimum 7 years of experience in conceptual, preliminary and/or detailed design of CANDU instrumentation and control systems.
• Familiarity with QA programs and CSA/IEEE I&C standards is an asset.
• Experience at a nuclear plant or similar installation is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop I&C systems for CANDU and other nuclear projects.
• Define system functional and performance requirements, control logic, and setpoints.
• Prepare specifications, sizing, and documentation for I&C components.
• Produce I&C design drawings and wiring diagrams; coordinate with drawing office.
• Interface with engineering disciplines, suppliers, and site teams.
• Provide technical input for reviews and regulatory inquiries; support site engineering groups.

Overview

An Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) engineer/designer is required to work on the design and development of I&C systems on projects involving new designs and/or enhancements (via Services type of work) to CANDU plants and other nuclear installations.

Your role

• Perform conceptual and/or detailed design of Candu instrumentation and control systems and modifications thereof, including definition of system functional and performance requirements and control algorithms, definition of control logic and wiring arrangements, control parameters, setpoints, instrument ranges and environmental qualification and seismic qualification.
• Perform specification, sizing, and selection for various types of I&C components, and produce component related documentation including assessment documents, setpoint calculations, error analyses, technical specifications, etc.
• Update and/or prepare I&C engineering design documents including design requirements, design description, elementary diagrams, functional specifications, etc., together with the supporting analysis/assessment documents and other design basis documents.
• Provide input to the drawing office for the preparation of various I&C related engineering drawings such as general arrangement drawings, instrument loop diagrams, wiring and connection diagrams, bills of materials, etc.
• Provide or update wiring and technical design input to computerized wiring programs.
• Interface with various engineering disciplines, suppliers, and other areas of the company.
• Assist in providing responses to technical enquiries from design review teams and regulatory agencies.
• Assist in providing technical support to engineering groups at site.- Deliver technical presentations accurately and effectively.
• Manage assigned work effectively, including prioritizing, executing, managing schedule and budget, and reporting, to meet project goals.

About you

• Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, member in good standing.
• BS Honors degree in a relevant field of I&C/Electrical/Automation engineering.
• Minimum 7 Years experience in conceptual, preliminary and/or detailed design of CANDU instrumentation and control systems and modifications. Familiarity with Engineering Change Control/Modification process is an asset.
• Experience at an operating nuclear power station or a similar installation is not required but would be an asset.
• Demonstrate good technical skills and problem-solving capabilities and be able to seek practical solutions to engineering problems.
• Demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills as well as a strong customer focus and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Familiarity with instrumentation and control system functions, configurations and equipment as used for CANDU plant process systems, safety systems or safety-related systems, or for similar systems in other industries would be an asset.
• Previous experience with methodologies and processes used for I&C modernization of a nuclear power plant would be an asset.
• Familiarity with industrial/nuclear QA programs and procedures along with pertinent CSA, IEEE, or related I&C engineering codes and standards would be an asset.
