We are seeking an HVDC Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Station Design Department. Under the general direction of the Automation & Controls Engineer or delegate, you will provide technical expertise and strategic direction in the design, procurement, construction, commissioning, standards, and requirements for mechanical systems in Transmission, Distribution, High-Voltage DC, and Thermal Generation facilities.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design engineer role and coordinate complex multidisciplinary projects and teams, directing project deliverables and maintaining accountability to meet schedules and project cost estimates.
- Mentor and develop a team of professionals, support engineers, and consultants in scoping, estimating, conceptual design, detailed design, procurement, acceptance testing, and commissioning of mechanical systems for HVDC converter stations and other facilities; prepare and oversee complex material procurements related to mechanical systems.
- Act as on-site technical expert to assist or lead commissioning of mechanical systems; undertake occasional field trips to enterprise facilities and suppliers to support project work.
- Prepare and oversee conceptual designs, reports, and estimates to support scope development and selection of preferred alternatives.
- Prepare and oversee designs, specifications, reports, standards, and programs for new and existing stations to ensure quality standards and design criteria are met by project teams, consultants, suppliers, and contractors.
- Liaise with other departments, divisions, and business units to ensure completed projects meet ongoing requirements.
- Review and approve shop and design drawings and liaise with suppliers, contractors, and consultants to ensure compliance with design criteria, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Serve as a specialized resource for complex technical and business problems in the field of hydroelectric drivetrain machinery design; assist the Section Head with administrative and strategic assignments and departmental planning.
- Contribute to strategy development and the creation of internal design standards and best practices; manage and review design work by external engineering consultants and provide specialized technical advice to manufacturers, vendors, and contractors.
- Represent Manitoba Hydro during visits to manufacturers' facilities to witness factory and site tests, collect design information, and ensure conformance of construction with design.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, with a minimum of seven years of directly related experience, including at least two years directing engineers, technologists, technicians, and engineering aids.
- Membership as a Professional Engineer or licence with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba.
- Must obtain and maintain a current Personnel Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba Hydro policy P513.
- Valid Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of Electric Transmission, Distribution, High-Voltage DC Conversion, and Diesel Generation facilities.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of rotating synchronous machines, turbomachinery, and auxiliary systems related to synchronous generators, synchronous condensers, and high-voltage electrical equipment. Experience with hydrogen-cooled machinery is an asset.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of industrial mechanical systems, including building HVAC, heat recovery systems, pneumatic, hydraulic, instrumentation systems, and hydrogen cooling systems.
- Proven ability to determine design details for major equipment in conjunction with manufacturers' engineers; experience in leading the preparation of engineering drawings with a strong understanding of drafting standards and best practices.
- Proven ability to plan, organize, and direct engineering work involving high specialization and collaboration with personnel at various levels both internally and externally.
- In-depth knowledge of safety systems, mechanical engineering standards, regulatory requirements, codes, and practices, including general knowledge of ITSM.
- Experience in Equipment Commissioning, Specification Writing, and Equipment Overhauls is an asset.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in carrying out complex projects with minimal supervision.
- Willingness and ability to travel by air, land, and water as required.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $51.34-$70.34 Hourly, $98,380.88-$134,784.78 Annually.
