We are seeking a highly motivated Human Resources Generalist to join our team. The ideal candidate will bring solid HR experience, strong bilingual communication skills (English & French), and proven expertise in Workday. This role requires a strong understanding of Quebec employment laws and regulations to ensure compliance and support our employees effectively and a strong understanding of labor relations in a unionized environment. This role will perform a variety of support functions providing service to the organization on a national level. The duties include management of day-to-day administration related to employee data, training, performance management, recruitment, benefits and policy interpretation.
This position reports directly to the Senior Director of Human Resources.
Job responsibilities
- Serve as the first point of contact for employee inquiries, ensuring timely, professional, and accurate responses in both English and French.
- Administer and maintain employee data in Workday, including onboarding, changes, and terminations.
- Support HR programs such as performance management, employee engagement, and training initiatives.
- Advise managers and employees on HR policies, procedures, and Quebec-specific employment standards.
- Assist with employee relations matters, investigations, and conflict resolution.
- Prepare HR reports and analytics using Workday and other tools.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, provincial, but more specifically Quebec labor laws, including CNESST requirements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of HR processes and practices.
- Ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with health, safety, quality and environmental management systems as well as corporate and local policies;
- Performs role in a manner that is reflective of Brenntag’s Core Values, within regulatory requirements and company policies, programs and expectations;
- Coordinates routine HR activities including: process approvals, onboarding, exit interviews, standard reporting and all related HR documentation;
- Assists with other HR administrative matters such as HR metrics, employment verification letters, HRIS troubleshooting and administration;
- Supports the HR team through active participation in ad hoc meetings, training and other project assignments;
- Ensures employee file and sign-off requirements are accurate and up-to-date;
- Responds to general employee HR inquiries and other routine requests, and elevates matters as required;
- Responsible to ensure all new hire paperwork is sent, received and filed correctly;
- Assists with administration related to benefits and pension including Workers Compensation forms, annual medicals, benefit and pension enrollment, changes and terminations, follow up on items relating to employee leaves etc.;
- Participates in the continuous improvement intiatives of processes, systems and orientation, offering insight and ideas on how to continuously utilize best practices and documentation to elevate HR value proposition;
- Coordinates various events, meetings and training;
- Completes other tasks and special projects as required.
Education & experience
- Minimum 2-5 years of progressive HR experience, preferably in a generalist role
- Post Secondary Education in Human Resources, Business Administration or equivalent is preferred
- Must be bilingual – fluent in English and French both written and spoken
- Hands-on experience with Workday HRIS (required).
- Experience with Dayforce, preferred
- Strong computer skills in the use of Microsoft Suites (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
- Strong knowledge of Quebec employment laws and related HR practices.
- Previous experience in a unionized environment preferred
- CHRP designation or working towards it is considered an asset.
- Excellent communications skills, verbal and written
- Highly organized and possesses effective time management skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships at all levels of the organization
- Experience working in a matrix organization preferred
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
