Position Overview

Responsible for providing professional level Human Resources support and guidance with an emphasis in employee relations, health & safety and education to employees and management within a specific geographical area.

Essential Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Provide front line support and guidance to leadership in all functional areas of human resources, if applicable ensuring action decisions are made with consideration to fairness and precedent
  • Perform routine and complex investigations involving employees, supervisors and management in the areas of harassment, discrimination and other employee relations issues
  • Propose recommendations and disposition for investigations and ensure timely follow-up with impacted employees
  • Provide assistance in the form of advice and counsel to employees and leadership in the interpretation and application of policies and procedures, ensure compliance with company policies and procedures and applicable provincial and federal laws and regulations
  • Through participation in monthly H&S meetings and ongoing centre visits, provide support to leadership and employees in the area of health & safety including compliance requirements and opportunities for improvement
  • Assist local leadership and employees with the safe and early return to work from provincial workplace insurance plans and STD/LTD
  • Provide front line support to managers and employees in the area of operational and regulatory education
  • Provide advice and counsel to managers in the proper handling of employee complaints
  • Partner with and build strong relationships with key partners including operations management and other Human Resources professionals, i.e., benefits, compensation, recruitment and education
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with third party vendors (recruitment agencies, insurance carriers and workplace insurance boards
  • May counsel employees for career path, and conduct exit interviews
  • Collect and analyze data, prepare reports and investigative summaries for review by HR and operational leadership
  • Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
  • Perform other duties as required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Post-secondary degree in Human Resources or related field, required
  • Three (3) years human resources experience
  • Knowledge and practical application experience in investigations, mediations, and alternative dispute resolution
  • Knowledge and practical application experience of federal labour and employment law, Employment Equity, Canadian Human Rights Code, Canada Labour Code Part II
  • Knowledge of applicable provincial workplace insurance compliance requirements
  • Intermediate level of experience with ATS, HRIS and Timekeeping systems (i.e., Kronos, Workday)
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision and function effectively in situations that may be potentially adversarial
  • Possess sensitivity and tact in dealing with employees and leadership
  • General familiarity with compensation and benefits
  • Excellent time management, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills, including excellent attention to detail
  • Engaging and influential communication style with a focus on relationship building
  • Excellent critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Sharepoint and Outlook)
  • Ability/willingness to learn new applications, software, systems, and equipment as required
  • Professional verbal, reading and written communication skills, with a high degree of professionalism, confidentiality, and discretion
  • Bilingual (English/French) preferred; required in Quebec
Working Conditions

Must be able and willing to travel as required

Valid Driver’s License required

Hours may vary due to operational need

Office located in dock environment; exposure to varied weather conditions, exhaust, fumes, dust, noise
