Responsibilities

• Carry out duties of Protective Care, River Point, Men’s and Non-binary Withdrawal Management Services and Mainstay according to policy.
• Complete and send daily shift reports at shift end.
• Provide break coverage per approved schedule; report deviations in daily reports.
• Provide extra coverage during peak periods in assigned services.
• Track and enter statistics per program area standards.
• Attend Mainstay shift changes meetings.
• Report urgent scheduling issues or concerns to on-call manager.
• During staffing shortages, provide coverage across programs as trained.

HOURS OF WORK: Days (07:30 to 16:00)

Job Summary

In accordance with Main Street Project Inc.’s mission, goals, policies and procedures, the Float Support Worker functions as a member of a team in providing services designed to assist participants in meeting their basic needs and ensure their safety and well‑being while involved with MSP program areas. The Float Support worker primarily works in Mainstay providing break coverage and support in Protective Care, Men’s and Non‑binary Withdrawal Management Services or other programs as required. The Float Support Worker maintains the core values of MSP regarding harm reduction, choice, equity, and diversity to encourage individuals’ capacity building.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Carry out the Support Worker duties of Protective Care, River Point, Men’s and Non‑binary Withdrawal Management Services and Mainstay according to policy
• Complete and send daily shift report at the end of each shift
• Provide break coverage in adherence with MSP approved break schedule, reporting any deviation from this schedule in the daily shift report
• Provide extra coverage in Protective Care, River Point Men’s and Non‑Binary Withdrawal Management Services during peak periods.
• Track and enter statistics in accordance with program area standards
• Attend all Mainstay shift changes meetings
• Report any urgent scheduling issues, incidences or concerns to on‑call manager for direction
• During staffing shortages, provide shift coverage in Protective Care, River Point, Men’s and Non‑Binary Withdrawal Management Services and Mainstay. The float may be required to cover in other program areas. In this case they would only provide coverage in areas for which they are trained.

Qualifications

• Relevant education and experience working in the field of human services preferably with adults experiencing homelessness, mental health and substance use issues
• Experience working in an emergency shelter, outreach or residential environment
• Post‑secondary education in the field of addictions and mental health is considered an asset. Ability to work with a client‑centred care philosophy
• Ability to apply Harm Reduction and Housing First philosophies in their day‑to‑day support of participants
• Knowledge of the effects of poverty and the determinants to health
• Ability to work collaboratively in a multi‑disciplinary team
• Knowledge in the addiction and mental health fields
• Knowledge of Indigenous culture
• Lived Experience. Knowledge gained from personal experiences relevant to the role.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, both oral and written
• An understanding/experience in working with culturally diverse populations
• Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving abilities
• Ability to work independently with minimal oversight
• Ability to be flexible and adaptable to on‑shift needs

Conditions Of Employment

• Ability to meet the physical demands required for the role which include being on your feet for long period of time, lifting up to 50 lbs, and cleaning duties (bending, reaching, push/pulling, crouching)
• Exposure to biohazards including but not limited to blood, bodily fluids, and syringes
• Ability to work with individuals who use substances and/or experience mental health issues
• Ability to provide support in high intensity incidents including but not limited to medical emergencies and aggressive individuals
• Comfortable working in environment where Indigenous ceremonies and practices are actively taking place including Smudging
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Clear Vulnerable Sector Search and a Clear Adult Abuse Registry Check are required. Ability to work with individuals who use substances and/or experience mental health issues
