Job summary

A Canadian Indigenous community in Ontario is seeking a Housing Maintenance Worker. The role involves daily maintenance and repairs of band property. Candidates must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License and have knowledge of occupational health and safety. This position requires teamwork and effective communication skills. Preference will be given to Anishinabek applicants.

Position Status: Term Full-time & On- Call
Department: Capital Projects & Public Works

Reporting Relationship

The Housing Maintenance Worker works under the direction of the Capital Projects & Public Works Department Manager.

Position Objective

The Housing Maintenance Worker is responsible for the daily maintenance and repair of band property and band housing.

Essential Functions
  • Ensures that the band buildings and band property are properly maintained daily by completing minor repairs
  • Repair Elder Residences
  • Maintenance of walkways and keep them clear of snow, ice and debris.
  • Assist with maintaining the roads during the winter months by snow ploughing and working on snow removal vehicles, changing tires, etc.
  • Operates equipment relating to grass cutting
  • Ensures equipment is maintained and serviced appropriately regularly to avoid breakdowns.
  • Abides by MFN personnel policy and occupational health and safety practices.
  • Completes daily logs and submits to Department Manager as required.
  • Maintain accurate records on all equipment in relation to maintenance, repairs and location of equipment always
  • Completes daily logs and submits to Department Manager as required.
  • Responsible for direct supervision of more than one (1) employee
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License - Class G, preferred Class DZ
  • WHIMIS
  • Working knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety standards and practices
  • Must adhere to the use of personal safety equipment (i.e. steel toe boots, safety vest, etc.)
  • Basic mechanical and electrical training
  • Must have previous renovation and/or carpentry experience and training
  • Planning and organization skills for working schedule and/or work priorities
  • Working knowledge of computer software is an asset
Other

Knowledge of the Anishnabek culture and traditions; fluency in Anishinabemowin is a strong asset

Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills
Ability to work as a team player
VSS/CRC requirement must be current (30 days) and must be an Original or Certified copy

CRC/VSS Rationale: M’Chigeeng First Nation and its agents are in a position of trust in services to band member children and/or vulnerable adults, so a safe and secure working environment is mandatory. Applicants must provide a clear VSS Certificate and the CRC must have a record clear and/or dated of any convictions relating to sexual interference, sexual assault or related charges. The VSS must be current (30 days) and must be an original.
