About the position

All Heritage Presenter streams will deliver interpretive presentations, programs and activities to provide visitors of the park / site with opportunities to discover, appreciate, learn about, and enjoy the natural and cultural heritage of Jasper National Park. This includes hands‑on and participatory activities, visitor centered activities, and story sharing. Please indicate on your application which stream(s) you are interested in being considered for.

STREAM 1 - General Interpreter

Your role focuses on the delivery of formal interpretive programs in the town, campgrounds, and day‑use areas. You will learn and use effective and dynamic communication techniques and skills to engage and inspire visitors from around the world. Program topics may include but are not limited to fire and forest health, human‑wildlife coexistence, glaciers and climate change, species at risk, and aquatic invasive species.

STREAM 2 - Living with Wildlife Interpreter

Your role focuses on human‑wildlife coexistence and visitor engagement. You will drive a lot while on patrol, looking for, and responding to wildlife traffic jams and unattended wildlife attractants. At wildlife jams, you will communicate safety messages with visitors so Wildlife Management Officers can focus on the animals. You will also provide safe wildlife viewing opportunities, activity stations, guided hikes, roving, and work at special events. This work requires effective and dynamic communication skills to keep you, your co‑workers and wildlife safe.

Conditions of employment
  • Obtain and maintain a reliability status security clearance
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent
  • You will be required to wear a Parks Canada uniform and wear it in accordance with the Parks Canada Uniform Policy.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including overtime, weekends, and statutory or provincial/territorial holidays, as required.
  • You will be required to work and travel in a variety of terrains and weather conditions while performing your duties.

Education

A secondary school diploma / high school diploma according to provincial standards or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience. Education equivalency: An acceptable combination of individual courses or experience relevant to the position (i.e. interpretation, performing arts, public speaking, dramatic arts, museum studies, traditional Indigenous teachings, history or other discipline relevant to the position) may be considered.

Experience
  • Experience working in the fields of natural and / or cultural interpretation, theatre / performing arts or public communications;
  • Experience delivering messages and information to public audiences (not academic course related audiences) in face‑to‑face situations with the purpose of engagement, entertainment and / or motivation;
  • Experience in customer service, including but not limited to: information services, safety messaging, compliance / prevention duties, addressing complaints and concerns. Applied / assessed at a later date.
Knowledge
  • Interpretive theory and techniques such as storytelling, demonstration, theatre programs or guided walks;
  • General knowledge of Canada’s natural and / or cultural heritage as it relates to Jasper National Park.
Abilities
  • Client Focus – Providing service excellence to internal and / or external clients;
  • Communication through Interpretation – Listening to others and communicating articulately to inform, influence and involve;
  • Teamwork – Working collaboratively with others to achieve organizational goals;

Various language requirements – English Essential or Bilingual (Imperative, Level: B / B).

Asset experience
  • Experience facilitating interpretive activities that are holistic, participatory, dialogic and / or visitor centred.
  • Experience in driving on busy roads / highways in all types of weather conditions; minimum 2 years driving experience.
  • Experience working near wildlife.
