Job summary

Island Health is seeking a full-time Hematopathologist based in Nanaimo to join the integrated hematopathology practice. The role includes diagnostic oversight across multiple laboratories, teaching, and clinical consultation within a broad service portfolio.

Candidates must be eligible for RCPSC certification in Hematological Pathology and for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. The position is available immediately with site travel as needed.

Qualifications

• Eligible for Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in Hematological Pathology.
• Eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
• Experience in hematopathology services including bone marrow biopsy, immunohematology and transfusion medicine is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Provide diagnostic hematopathology and laboratory oversight as part of a team of eight hematopathologists.
• Contribute to teaching, quality assurance, and administrative activities.
• Occasional travel between sites and clinical consultation with other specialties.

Role and Facility Information

The Department of Laboratory Medicine, Pathology and Medical Genetics at Island Health is seeking a full-time Hematopathologist based in Nanaimo, to join the integrated hematopathology practice across the health authority.

Island Health’s hematopathology service includes three major hospital-based hematology and transfusion medicine laboratories along with several community hospitals, serving a population of more than 900,000 and supporting a broad range of services including hematology, coagulation, immunology, flow cytometry, immunohematology, and transfusion medicine. Opportunities for lymph node sign-out may be available for qualified candidates.

The successful candidate will join a team of seven other hematopathologists providing diagnostic laboratory oversight and participating in island-wide hematology and transfusion medicine services, bone marrow biopsy procurement, teaching, quality and administrative activities, and clinical consultation. Occasional travel between sites is expected.

As part of the University of British Columbia’s Island Medical Program, opportunities exist for faculty appointment, teaching, and clinical research.

Candidates must be eligible for Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in Hematological Pathology and for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. The position is available immediately, subject to candidate availability.
