Job description

Purpose: Reporting to the Supervisor, Mechanical, the Heavy Duty Mechanic is responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the company’s locomotives, generators, and support equipment. This includes the inspection, maintenance, servicing, and repair of locomotive and generator engines, as well as related systems and components.

The successful candidate will work alongside a collaborative team of tradespeople who share a commitment to safety, teamwork, and operational excellence. Apprentices may be considered for this position.

This position is designated Safety Critical under Transport Canada regulations. The incumbent will be required to periodically access active railway areas where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, the public, property, or the environment. As such, pre-employment testing and ongoing medical monitoring will be required.

Final candidates must successfully complete a Safety Critical Medical Exam and will undergo periodic medical monitoring as prescribed by Transport Canada.

Key Areas Of Accountabilities
  • Diagnose, service, and repair locomotive and generator engines and associated components.
  • Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and mechanical repairs on locomotives, generators, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Inspect and repair train car components and related systems as required.
  • Conduct locomotive safety inspections in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and operational standards.
  • Identify, protect, and report safety hazards; follow all safety rules, regulations, and policies in accordance with class one partner / the company’s General Operating Instructions and Transport Canada / FRA regulations.
  • Support operational reliability and efficiency through proactive maintenance and quality workmanship.
  • Participate in training and development, including familiarization with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR).
  • Perform work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions as part of a 24/7 operation.
Qualifications
  • Red Seal Journeyperson Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic certification.
  • Apprentices may be considered.
  • Valid driver’s license (asset).
Experience
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
  • Previous industrial, railway, or locomotive maintenance experience (asset).
  • Familiarity with CROR, FRA, and other railway safety and regulatory standards (asset).
  • Experience using CMMS or similar maintenance tracking systems (asset).
Work Environment
  • Mid-April to Mid-October: Three (3) 12-hour night shifts per week.
  • Mid-October to Mid-April: Four (4) 10-hour day shifts per week.
  • May require occasional travel within the region.
Compensation
  • The base salary offered for this role is $45.81 per hour.
