Detailed Overview

Under the general supervision of the Nursing Supervisor, the Health Unit Aide assists Public Health Nurses in a variety of support and service areas such as organizing and setting up immunization clinics; distribution of supplies for needle exchange programs; maintaining and distributing the Unit's biological supply; conducting hearing and vision screening, maintaining and cleaning a variety of supplies and equipment and performing related clerical duties such as charting, collecting data, creating spreadsheets, data entry, word processing, filing and photocopying.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate, organize and/or conduct hearing and vision screening in various locations; record results and issue referrals per protocol.
  • Set up immunization clinics and maintain the supply of biologicals by monitoring stock levels, compiling orders, distributing supplies, and ensuring refrigeration and transport temperatures are maintained.
  • Maintain inventories of supplies and equipment – monitor levels, identify requirements, process orders, receive, verify, document, distribute and store shipments.
  • Cleans and sterilizes equipment and supplies per established procedures, including preparing and changing solutions, washing and drying supplies, and preparing for autoclaving.
  • Prepare equipment and supply bags by cleaning and stocking as required.
  • Provide support in clinical settings: set up, dismantle and clean rooms, weigh and measure babies, calibrate and clean equipment, distribute needle exchange supplies per protocol.
  • Perform administrative support duties: photocopying, booking client appointments, answering phones, assembling and maintaining files, packaging items for shipment, organizing and renewing pamphlets, marking new equipment.
  • Perform word processing and data entry tasks: correspondence, statistical data, client record maintenance using Word, Excel, graphics and databases; draft correspondence for review and signature.
  • Deliver and dispose of supplies, biologicals, materials and equipment: packaging, arranging pickup and delivery, transporting.
  • Maintain department resources: log materials out, track loans, maintain booking schedules, arrange equipment maintenance, manage petty cash account, receive payments and issue receipts as required.
  • Provide direction to volunteers and monitor and assist as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Grade twelve, Medical Office Assistant Certificate, plus one year of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid Class V B.C. Driver’s Licence and possession of a personal vehicle.
