Job summary

PCL Constructors Canada Inc. is seeking a Health, Safety & Environment Manager in Halifax, Nova Scotia. You will lead and implement health and safety initiatives across Atlantic Canada, empowering teams and driving continual improvement on innovative infrastructure projects.

Report to leadership with strong knowledge of OH&S and environmental legislation. The role requires coaching, mentoring, and effective communication with senior managers and project teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in OH&S or a related discipline.
  • CRSP certification preferred.
  • 9 years of experience in a related industry, with direct experience in HSE.
  • 4 years of experience in a supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of construction processes and terminology.
  • Strong ability to coach and mentor others.
  • Expert knowledge of OH&S and environmental legislation related to projects/area.
  • Ability to coach and mentor others on HSE processes.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills on HSE topics to senior managers and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and assists with implementation of project HSE and regulatory requirements.
  • Identifies, evaluates, develops, and delivers project-specific HSE training.
  • Reviews project training objectives and project trend action plans; communicates changes to project teams.
  • Verifies hazard identification tools are in place and evaluates process improvements.
  • Oversees HSE inspections and audits; provides coaching to team.
  • Guides project teams on audit requirements and reporting.
  • Evaluates PPE usage and develops PPE training as needed.
  • Develops and evaluates emergency response plan and crisis communication for projects.
  • Ensures equipment and tool inspections are conducted and documented.

Here's how a Health, Safety & Environment Manager for PCL Constructors Canada Inc. within Atlantic Canada contributes to our team:

Responsibilities
  • Develops and assists with implementation of project HSE and regulatory requirements.
  • Identifies, evaluates, develops, and delivers project-specific HSE training. Assists with the development of project training. Assists with the development of district specific training.
  • Reviews project training objectives and project trend action plans. Identifies industry statistics and hazards and communicates any expected/anticipated changes to project teams.
  • Verifies that hazard identification tools are in place on the project(s) and evaluates areas for process improvement.
  • Oversees, conducts and provides guidance and coaching to the team for formal HSE inspections and audits.
  • Provides guidance and coaching to project teams and direct reports on audit requirements.
  • Evaluates and verifies that appropriate PPE is being used on project sites. Develops specialized PPE training as required.
  • Develops and evaluates effectiveness of project emergency response plan and executes crisis communication plan for project(s).
  • Verifies that equipment and tool inspections are being conducted and documented as per the program.
  • Participates in the investigation process as per the incident investigation matrix, ensuring the quality of reports, identifying root causes and corrective actions, and determining when external resources are required.
  • Monitors work injury and ensures modified work is followed and properly documented.
