POSITION OVERVIEW

The Health Safety and Environmental Specialist is responsible for implementing and administering the Environmental and Health and Safety program for plants and business units in the employee’s assigned region. The employee must also represent Sika Canada with all our corporate partners (USA and Europe) with respect to shared responsibilities and communications related to health, safety and the environment as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Improve and maintain Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental standards to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Environmental Protection Act and other government requirements as well as global corporate safety requirements.
  • Co-chair the Joint Health & Safety Committee encouraging worker involvement.
  • Review all accident and incident investigation reports and make suggestions to prevent recurrence and assist in the development of corrective actions.
  • Produce monthly analysis of safety documentation and statistics.
  • Perform environmental monitoring, interpret data, prepare written reports documenting testing methodology, observations, results and recommendations.
  • Conduct internal health/safety and environmental inspections and audits, and follow up with the required corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with Management/Engineering to assist with Pre-Start and EHS Reviews, Process Management System and Job Hazard Analysis.
  • Act as the primary liaison with all governmental agencies concerning environmental, health and safety issues.
  • Monitor new and revised legislative requirements and ensure compliance.
  • Participate in and support regular meetings to discuss workplace safety and regulatory concerns and opportunities.
  • Conduct orientation with new employees on all health, safety and environmental compliance.
  • Administer environmental health and safety compliance policies and programs including the regular maintenance of environmental health and safety Key Measurable Indicators and related reports.
  • Coordinate and schedule third‑party audits/inspections, testing and sampling related to health, safety and environmental issues, and maintain updated third‑party test results.
  • Conduct training on various environmental, health and safety topics for employees, supervisors and management.
  • Support Contractor Management relevant to health, safety and environmental issues and legislation.
  • Additional duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • University Degree or College Diploma (Occupational Health and Safety or Environmental) or related disciplines.
  • 3 years of experience in Health, Safety & Environmental within a manufacturing environment (preferred).
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations, codes and legislative requirements relating to OSHA, CSA and the Environmental Protection Act.
  • Health and Safety certifications and accreditations (e.g., GHS, Working at Heights, Train the Trainer programs, Joint Health and Safety Committee).
  • Proficiency in Windows Office Suites.
  • Strong analytical skills to analyze and interpret data trends.
  • Practices and maintains integrity while following company policies.
  • Ability to develop influence and maintain effective relationships across all levels in the organization.
  • Bilingual in French and English.
  • Results‑oriented, self‑motivated individual with a sense of initiative.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Available to travel to other plants and locations across the region and across Canada (10% to 25%).
  • Varied shift schedule due to supporting both day and night shifts at various locations (across time zones).
  • Moderate level of occupational stress due to adapting to situations, meeting deadlines and navigating workload.
  • Working in manufacturing plants with or around moving machinery/equipment and designated substances (silica) may require use of a respirator at times.
  • Working indoors in office and from home office with air conditioning and heating as applicable.
  • Ergonomic workspace provided.
