About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the Director, Health Promotion, the Health Promotion Coordinator is part of a team that leads and drives initiatives focused on the promotion of health and wellbeing for Nova Scotians. The Health Promotion Coordinator provides strong, competent leadership, and specialized subject matter expertise in the areas of health promotion, population health and health equity. They support the formulation, development, and administration of legislation, provincial policy, system strategy, indicators and performance standards that are responsive to the changing health needs of Nova Scotians, are aligned with the overall strategic vision and mission of the Department and contribute to overall improvement in health system performance and population health outcomes.

Primary Accountabilities

Provide leadership in the identification and development of comprehensive health promotion policy, strategy, standards, legislation and regulation to drive improvements in population health outcomes.

  • Lead and manage projects and teams / committees, working collaboratively with health system partners, provincial and federal government partners, academia, and community-based organizations.
  • Lead the preparation of reports, policy and background papers, briefing notes, and cabinet documents on a wide range of health system issues.
  • Plan and lead consultations with other government departments, health system partners and the public to provide information and enhance understanding of priority issues.
Qualifications and Experience

As the successful candidate, you possess strong interpersonal skills, enjoy working in a fast-paced, agile environment and are able to demonstrate the following:

  • A post-secondary degree in a health-related discipline plus several years of progressive experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in the field of health promotion.
  • Demonstrated experience in policy development.
  • Ability to work with multisectoral and diverse partners with tact, diplomacy and utilizing good negotiation, consultation, and facilitation skills.
  • Broad understanding of corporate and government issues and priorities.
  • Outstanding communication and influencing skills with an ability to build effective relationships to operate successfully in a political or complex environment.
  • Well organized, capable of prioritizing high level work under tight timelines, and able to exercise sound judgement under pressure.
  • Excellent writing skills for items including policy briefing materials, presentations, or reports.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

Equivalent experience and training includes, but is not limited to:

  • A Master’s Degree in Public Health or Health Promotion plus 3 years of progressive experience in a related field.

Working Conditions

Most of your time is spent in a comfortable office setting sitting for long periods of time.

Travel throughout the province is required.

Your normal work week is 35 hours / week, 7 hours / day. You may be required to work overtime on occasions.

Pay Grade: EC 11 Salary Range: $3,;- $4,;Bi-Weekly
